Suddenly, the idea of a new Tekken film doesn’t sound so bad

I just found out that a movie of a popular fighting game is being made. I plan on tekken my girlfriend to see it.

Video game movies. That’s a genre that has a mortality rate of 110%. It’s a toxic field of film-making, so bad, that not even Alan Smithee will allow his name to be used in the credits. Street fighter, The Legend of Chun-Li, Super Mario Bros and King of Fighters are just a few examples of the horror to spew forth from the Hollywood machine, as some of our favourite games were ripped apart.

Near the top of that list, is Tekken, a film so bad, that the DVD comes with a complimentary tube of eye bleach, in order to help consumers make it through the garbage that occurs. You’d forgive us for being sceptical then, about a new Tekken film being planned.

But then we heard, that a certain Thai choreographer was going to be behind the latest adaptation. A man by the name of Prachya Pinkaew. He’s the guy who set up the fighting sequences of some cult films, such as Ong Bak, and The Protector.

Perhaps you’ve heard of them?

Over at the Cannes film festival, Crystal Sky pictures announced that a prequel to the first film was in production, a project that they have named Tekken: Rise Of The Tournament. Prachya Pinkaew will be captaining this ship, which Crystal Sky has begun recruiting actors for.

They’re currently looking for thespians who will at least resemble their on-screen characters, so perhaps we’ll see a few top notch Asian talents trade fists and kicks soon. Meanwhile, Tekken creator Katsuhiro Harada has tweeted the opposite, claiming that Crystal Sky is NOT making a prequel film based on the property.

Rather eloquent, isn’t he? However, seeing as how Crystal Sky don’t actually need his permission or blessing to make the film, we’re banking on the studio this time around. For those of you that are unfamiliar with Pinkaew’s work, here’s a quick smattering of some of the intense fight scenes that he has been behind.

Honestly, I doubt that any script writer can drum up a treatment that doesn’t make the Tekken universe sound corny or stupid. But put that aside for some incredible fight sequences, and I’ll be there, popcorn in hand, to see some bones break and heads snap, in some truly visceral action sequences.

Although, I’m even more excited to see Madea in an arm lock from an MMA fighter, later this year.
