SWTOR will allow homosexuality but only as a patch

Last night Nick and I headed through to Varsity College to sit and listen to their debating club debate the merits or viability of censorship.

One of the points raised was that it’s all good and well to give a game a rating but what about DLC and patches that drop after the fact that may change the moral code or substance of a game.

Take for example SWTOR, Star Wars: The Old Republic, which is an upcoming MMO set in the Star Wars universe and that at launch will not allow same sex marriages to take place.

So if you’ve got some overly conservative censorship board then right now everything is A-Okay.

(turn on deep south accent)

Yeah it’s got your killings and violence but absolutely no homosexualisation as that is wrong and evil and all things immoral… and stuff like right

And so the game gets it’s normal rating and then bang, DLC drops and all hell breaks loose as the gates of hell open up and Armageddon reigns down upon us.

Okay I’m getting side tracked here, SWTOR has confirmed that while the game won’t allow same sex marriage at launch it will be implemented in a post patch release.

The reason for this is because

Due to the design constraints of a fully voiced MMO of this scale and size, many choices had to be made as to the launch and post-launch feature set. Same gender romances with companion characters in Star Wars: The Old Republic will be a post-launch feature. Because The Old Republicis an MMO, the game will live on through content expansions which allow us to include content and features that could not be included at launch, including the addition of more companion characters who will have additional romance options.

Honestly it makes no sense to me, they would have had to code in at some point to only allow same sex marriage, which is a little insulting in this day and age, so saying that it’s a design constraint is simply saying they decided on a feature and now don’t have time to remove it.

The question is should we care anymore?
