Take a look at Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon in action

Far Cry 3’s standalone, 80’s infused spinoff Blood Dragon is certainly raising eyebrows – and it seems to be doing so for all the right reasons. Frankly, it’s mental – and it pokes fun at many current industry traditions.

Thought by many to be little more than an elaborate April fool’s hoax by Ubisoft thanks to its ludicrous website, Blood Dragon is indeed a real thing, and takes the guise of a “futuristic” 1980’s action film, complete with all the era trappings of the genre – including Michael Biehn.

Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon is THE Kick-Ass Cyber Shooter taking place on a bizarre open-world island crawling with evil. Welcome to an 80’s VHS vision of the future. The year is 2007 and you are Sargent Rex Colt, a Mark IV Cyber Commando who’s fighting against a cyborg army gone rogue.

Your mission: get the girl, kill the baddies, and save the world. Experience every cliché of a VHS era vision of a nuclear future, where cyborgs, blood dragons, mutants, and Michael Biehn (Terminator, Aliens, Navy Seals) collide. Playing Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon doesn’t require a copy of Far Cry 3,” says the game’s official blurb.

The game’s set for release next month. Platform’s haven;t been announced – but its now-missing XBLA listing certainly suggests it’ll be headed to the Xbox 360. It’ll also likely hit the PC, as it’s somehow already been leaked – as shown by this gameplay video (that’s sure to be pulled by Ubisoft any minute minute now).

Take a look. I’m intrigued, and I especially like how it pokes fun at the incessant, hand-holding tutorials we now get in games.

The Saints Row developers really got the industry to reconsider “zany” and “crazy”. I wonder if this is going to be recurrent theme. Serious game gets released, gets at least one dodgy and insane DLC expac to lighten the mood.

ROFLOL oh man this looks so good, I love the fact that HUD is talking to you explaining everything.

Is it just me that feels this way or is far cry one of the best Fps’s released in a long time? I mean I’m not talking about Multiplayer or amazing set peices but, I mean the actual immersion and acting and story was utterly amazing.

It reminds me of what Fps’ used to be like. It seems all people do is associate fps’ with COD or BF and they think it’s just about shooting. yes, you shoot but FPS, the actual perspective of FIRST PERSON can be used to great lengths in terms of immersing the player deeper into the game. look at portal or Half-Life.

I grew up playing Fps’ and RPGs and to see what it has become. sigh, makes me sad… my beloved FPS,JRPG are dwindling in the midst of the greed filled, twitch market… 🙁

Ah the ever tantalizing debate of popcorn FPS vs Immersive Story FPS.

So many people believe that deep story lines should be kept for RPG style games. Why I don’t know. But I do agree with you that I miss the story based shooters from back in the day such as Half Life

I for one believe Deep stories can exist in most genres. Not to say every game should be seep and thought provoking, I like my popcorn games every now and then but it’s becoming mind numbingly monotonous to play an fps these days ….twitch and twitch is all we ever see now. It’s just sad that FPS’ are what they are now. GOD I’M SICK OF ARMY GAMES and GENERIC shooters. bloody hell …

“The year is 2007. It is the future. Earth has been ravaged by a nuclear war and new paths for peace must be found. A U.S. cyborg army may have found a solution: a powerful bioweapon on a distant island. A Mark IV Cyber Commando, Sergeant Rex Power Colt has been sent over to gather information and figure out what the hell is going on.”

a Mark IV Cyber Commando, the only thing that would make this better is if he cost $1,000,000.

Btw anyone notice Michael Mando in Orphan Black? It’s Vaas on your TV baby!
