Tales from the borderlands

I’ve been skeptical about Telltale Games’ Tales from the Borderlands. Sure, the art style will fit, but how were they gonna take a gun happy game like Borderlands and turn it into a point-and-click choose-your-own-death game? Well, they have a plan, and it actually seems like it could be interesting.

Over at SXSW, Telltale co-founder Kevin Bruner explained that the game will be more about humor, unlike other Telltale games, and it will look at what happened during Borderlands from a non-Big Fish perspective. Gearbox writer Antony Burch explained:

It’s not about the badasses doing badass things – it’s about schmos trying to get by, and that makes the world feel much more real. Borderlands can be more than just shooting people in the face repeatedly. That it could be shooting people in the face repeatedly and then talking to them is a cool possibility for us.

So what is the game about? Well, it picks up after the events of Borderlands 2 and follows con-artist Fiona and Hyperion worker Rhys as they tell their version of what happened, obviously from differing viewpoints. It will be up to the player to work out which version is correct, if either one is telling the truth.

I’m glad that they’re taking a different approach and telling a different story. I seriously couldn’t see it working trying to do anything too similar to the original Borderlands, but there is still a lot of scope for extra story telling. I suppose we’ll have to see how it goes, but it might be nice to have a more upbeat Telltale game – I love The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among us, but they’re both such downers.

Telltale has made their entire SXSW talk available for those who would like to watch it:

I am going to sell all my unborn children for this game. Because slavery is only allowed if it puts cash money into my Steam Wallet. I am really really really keen to see where they go with this. The Borderlands universe is such a rich environment to explore, story telling wise. I’m keen. Let’s do this.

Reminds me of this quaint true story I once read about a couple of explorers mapping out Canada they build a log cabin to spend the winter in so that they can have a head start the following year. Well one of then dies and his buddy buries him out back before the frosts set in. A few weeks in the guy gets very lonely so he digs up his dead buddy through the frozen ground. He spends the winter chatting to him but every so often he has a huge fight with the guy, some fights even become physical, and chucks him back in his grave for a few days before fetching him in again.

If it didn’t have such crap graphics I would’ve bought it instantly. I’m no graphics whore, but calling crap graphics “retro” doesn’t make it non-crap.

Totally true, and they can still make “retro” graphics look good.

Yeah. I am sure, as a teenager, we wrote graphics like that (sprites) by hand in Turbo Pascal (UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH). Just because, you know you, we could. once. Lot of effort

I remember learning that when I had Comp Sci as an extra subject in school. I’m so old.
