Tekken boss would quit over DLC

Harada

Tekken’s creative director Katsuhiro Harada has previously said that if he has anything to do with it, Tekken will never include any paid DLC characters because it messes around with balancing – and makes the product less rounded as a whole. It’s something he’s standing by – even though corporate pressure from Namco is edging to dictate otherwise.

"I’ve been saying that, at least for Tekken, regarding techniques, characters and stages, these three things won’t be charged for, even if they are DLC," he said to Eurogamer.

"Actually this is something my bosses have been asking me for quite a while now – what are our plans for DLC?" How much money can we make? They are a company, obviously, in it to make money. So it’s something I’m continually asked even now, but I haven’t changed my stance. If you’re making a fighting game, all of the elements necessary to enjoy it should be on the disc, or should at least be available for free."

Harada’s so firm in his stance that he’s said he’d consider quitting Namco if he were forced to include paid character DLC.

"If I was given the choice to include paid DLC or quit Namco, I would maybe quit… Or maybe I would just say ‘get someone else to deal with this’," he said.

He’s said he has no issues with paid DLC – but only if that DLC was for superfluous fluff that wouldn’t affect character balancing – like soundtracks, costumes and movies. Interestingly, the next Tekken game will feature character DLC – available as a pre-order incentive. Those who pre-order will be given the chance to play as one of four characters – Kunimitsu, Michelle Chang, Angel and Ancient Ogre. Before you raise your pitchforks pointing out Harada’s hypocrisy; these characters are exclusive for a limited time, before becoming openly available – and importantly free – DLC.
