The Assassin's Creed 3 ending will pay off, set up future games

Well, duh.

While Assassin’s Creed 3 is bringing some closure to the current storyline, wrapping up numerous games and loose ends, don’t expect it to be a complete ending. Ubisoft still has plans for their franchise, and it will continue in some shape or form, which will be hinted at in Assassin’s Creed 3, as some extra threads have been left in the animus which will set the scene for future games in that universe.

Speaking to Shack, lead writer Corey May explained that there will be some material left in the third game, that can provide some plausible room for a successor project to take place, once the end credits roll on Assassin’s Creed 3;

“Should they decide in the future to do other stuff, there’s plenty of room to explore, plenty of seeds that have been planted that won’t conflict,” May said.

It was my intent to provide pay-off and to answer questions for those who are invested in them. It should provide a fairly lengthy ending that will also give room for answers and pay-off.

Assassin’s Creed isn’t exactly known for endings that left players shocked and surprised, but this is something that May is attempting to counteract, by creating a finale that won’t rely on smoke and mirrors, or predictable outcomes.

“The ending should not come out of nowhere. You will not wake up and find that you were in an Animus reliving the life of someone who was in an Animus. We are not doing that. It was not all just a dream,” May said.

I think people that have invested in the Desmond storyline will understand where the end of the game comes from. We’re tying up loose ends and providing answers and resolution to things. You’re not going to get another tremendous insane-o cliffhanger.

That’s one thing that games are lacking in these days, as the drive to create sequels usually ends a title with a secret clip after the credits and a shadowy voice trope hinting at something bigger to come. It’s been seen in nearly all the big budget games so far, from Deus Ex to…well, pretty much every game out there.

Adding in some more threads always runs the possibility of watering down a storyline, or cheapening the end result, but then again, Ubisoft wants to keep their hidden-blade franchise alive and kicking. As long as it doesn’t interfere with the curtain being brought down on the saga, I’ve got no issues with it.

But for the love of Mike, can we please move away from shadowy-voice guy talking about plans and hinting to the future? That, would genuinely surprise me.

Assassin’s Creed 3 releases on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in late October and on PC and Wii U in November. Check out Stace’s hands-on impressions, and watch some new footage as Sam quizzes Ubisoft Montreal.
