The Crew's 30fps limit only for beta

Yesterday a forum post regarding The Crew caught my attention. The post in question seemed to confirmed that Ubisoft’s racer would have it’s frame rate capped to 30FPS on all platforms, including PC. Now that’s both true and not so true, and Ubisoft have cleared it up for us.

I received an email this morning from Ubisoft’s PR department, clearly explaining the situation. Yes, The Crew currently runs with a 30FPS cap on PC, but it seems that will only be so for the beta. Ubisoft wanted to provide players with a smooth experience, hence the decision to cap it for this brief testing period. The frame rate will, however, be unlocked by the time The Crew reaches shelves. At least, for PC it will be.

The Crew will still only run at 30FPS on all consoles. Curiously, it seems that even the Xbox 360 version of the game will manage to reach 1080p. I couldn’t expect the last-gen version to look as good as, say, the Xbox One version, but seeing the two run at the same framerate and resolution is somewhat rare. Here’s what Ubisoft had to say to us.

This 30 FPS cap actually only applies to the Beta.  The game will run in 1080p with 30 frames per second on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Xbox 360. For the PC version, we are aiming at offering the option to play with either 60 frames per second or 30 frames per second.

So if yesterday’s frame rate cap news was a bit of a deal breaker for you, then you can safely put The Crew back on your radar. That’s if you’re still willing to put up with uPlay and its own brand of nonsense.

The Crew will be released on Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360 and PC later this year. There will also be a console beta later in September.

I don’t know hey, Seems like the Marketers Forgot Their Schtick from last week, “Ubisoft will stop screwing over PC gamers” And the intern reminded them, so they had the framerate unlocked…. and the intern fired.

(side note, I’ve decided to stop blaming Ubisoft’s Developers so much.)

I’m getting such an MS vibe from Ubi these days.
NO, WE CAN’T DO IT! IT’S IMPOSSIBLE.

I’m looking forward to giving this a go tomorrow. I actually don’t even know much about the game other than you drive a car fast & probably have to brake when taking a corner.

Brake when turning a corner? I think The Crew is arcade, I don’t even know if they assign a brake button on arcade racers. 😉

What is an arcade racer? 😛

The last time I played a racing game was the original NFS Most Wanted, which I loved to bits.

That game was awesome. I actually dug out mine and installed it because I felt like an arcade racing game and none of the current ones are particularly intriguing. With the exception of The Crew, but it’s Ubisoft, so there’s an internal struggle over that one at the moment in me.

60 fps cap is still not ideal, but at least its better. “A smooth experience at 30fps”. Does he think we are retarded?

Well that’s a relief, or at least it would be if I intended to play the game.

Is it even possible to tell the difference between 60fps and, say, 100fps? I tend not to think so. Based on 3dmark gpu benchmarks that I ran back in the day, from 30fps to 40fps is a big difference, as is from 40fps to 60fps, but 60fps to 80fps? Can’t remember that there was much of a difference.

Yes there is a huge difference between 60 fps and 100 fps. There is a difference between 60 fps and 80 fps its just not enough for you to notice.

BTW the hoax that the human eye can only see 60fps is the biggest load of bull. Not jsut that it half’s the input latency. Input latency doesnt matter as much on consoles cause the controller moves so slow anyway compared to a mouse. Thats why they can get away with 30fps games on console and no one notices.

Once you start playing with a mouse and lets say a 120hz monitor at 120fps then you will notice a massive difference and will never want to play anything at 60fps anymore.

Now that you mention the screen hz it makes me wonder whether my screen back then was even capable of generating higher framerates than 60fps. I’m talking of a good 10 years ago so it may be possible, in which case it could explain why I don’t remember an increase in smoothness above 60ish fps.

You won’t see any if your monitor is 60Hz.

The same as you won’t see the difference between 30FPS and 60FPS on a 30Hz monitor etc.

Your monitor physically can’t display more than 60frames a second at 60Hz. That’s why you get screen tearing at higher frame rates than 60.

        Yep, everything you said.

I’d like to point out that the difference between 60FPS and 100FPS is non existent on a 60Hz monitor. If you have a 60 Hz monitor capping at 60FPS is better as you don’t get screen tearing and you physically can’t see a difference on a higher frame rate.

If you have a 120Hz monitor like you do though that’s a different story. However to keep games at 120 you need a hefty setup or need to drop some graphics options 🙁

Sorry just to hop in here, while you monitor cannot display the 120fps you can definitely feel a huge difference in input latency.

Your eyes wont see it but your hands and brain will feel a massive difference. The quicker your pc reacts to input you give it through your mouse and keyboard the less your brain needs to compensate for lag or a delay.

In real life your actions translates in real time, ie. if my brain tells my hand to scratch my balls and there is a delay between my brain giving the instruction and the actual movement is delayed then your coordination will be of. I will most probably scratch my leg. That’s just a over simplistic example … (tests was done on the Occulus Rift to prove it)

If you move your hand on the mouse at 60fps there will be a delay before the action happens. Its very slight but your brain picks it up and works overtime to try and compensate for it.

Lets say you play at 120fps with a 60fps monitor, this delay will be halved in a perfect world but its not the case. But for the sake of argument lets say its halved although your eyes cant pick up the movement due to a 60fps screen your brain will however pick up that the camera is where it should be at that point of time and thus doesn’t put so much strain on the brain.

When you hit 90 fps compared to 60fps your mouse feels lighter in a way, now put vsync on 60fps and you will notice the mouse movement on the screen feels very heavy.

The lighter feel is because of the higher frame rates and lower input latency.

In Quake Live/Quake 3 you cannot make certain jumps if you dont run over 125fps.

If you pair it with a 120hz monitor the effects are even greater if you can run games at 120fps.

But sir, if they want to offer a smooth experience how does capping it at 30FPS provide that? If you can already run it at more than 30FPS it’s already smooth so that makes no sense?

You can force it to the 60 FPS limit via the pc settings xml in the my documents folder (the game itself is hardlocked to 60).

That said it is in poor taste to soft lock a game on the PC for parity sake when it comes to the console versions as “Ubisoft wanted to provide players with a smooth experience, hence the decision to cap it for this brief testing period.” is complete and utter bullshit, you get smoother gameplay with a higher FPS cushion for when you want to max out a game and have the room for all the fx and high res textures for the high end gamer.

eg. I want an average of 45 fps so I set my self a goal to make sure the game runs at 60-120 fps depending on what game it is an its game engine.

so stop with all the parity bullshit and let us choose what fps we want to run our games at based on our settings, enough is enough.

50 to 60 fps is fine for me. With new resolutions coming out like 4k it will take a few years for people to get powerful enough hardware to even just get 60 fps. I will be keeping my 1920×1080 60Hz monitor for at least 2 more years before I even think of upgrading. Not everyone can afford a 1,000 dollar card or two of them to run games at 4k res if some game even support it yet. I think 4k is over kill unless you have over a 42 inch screen anyways.

We already have the hardware *points to the x79, z98 and x99 setups and all previous builds since then*, hell we are even soon getting 8k capable displays and that will drop the prices on the 4K displays, if you want you can run a multi-display setup and get any resolution you want at a cheaper cost (speaking of linus will be doing a setup with and without bezels soon).

        I currently have a lg-42LA6230 that has a native of 1920×1080@60 but
with my 780 I have it running at 3840×2160@64 for some games where I can
get above 45 consistent and all I paid for it at the time was *drum roll*.. AUD$950.

The main points to having a higher resolution setup is to:
        1) be able to downsample to get a higher pixel density and get a clearer display level AA – http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=346325
        2) Reduce the level of engine level AA needed thus allowing you still keep “jaggies” to a minimum whilst getting as much FPS you can out of your system when not downsampling.

Yes I know the idea that there is no point in getting more frames then your display can output at its max refresh rate but that is utter bull, I much prefer to deal with some tear than deal with massive dips in unoptimized games on my build, ffs most games even with vsync forced off I don’t get them and they run at 80fps+

fyi you don’t need a high end gpu for a decent gaming build depending on your budget and what games you want to play esp when you want to play 1920×1080@60, hell my work pc is using a dual core cpu with 4gb ddr2 ram and a 550ti and that is perfect as a temp machine till I get a gaming laptop that I am saving up for.

If YOU don’t need 4k then don’t invest in 4k, that’s a choice that others want to invest in, just save your money for the main components and when you feel you are ready to get a higher native resolution display and can afford it then go for it.
