The Darth Maul game is looking for a second chance

Some say that Darth Maul is just half the guy he used to be after that duel on Naboo with Obi-Wan “Higher Ground” Kenobi, but I still dig the guy. Sure, he may sport more tribal tattoos than a dude recovering from a hangover and poor life choices, but Darth Maul will always be the one Star Wars nemesis who deserved better.

And he almost got his moment back in the spotlight, back when LucasArts was a thing, before they were gobbled up by Disney. You might recall that a Darth Maul game was in the works, which would have starred the Sith lord in a title that was eerily reminiscent of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.

And yes, it looked freakin’ awesome. Unfortunately, that game was canned quicker than my proposal for an animated series starring Salacious Crumb, left to drift off into obscurity alongside Star Wars 1313.

But you can’t keep a good Sith Lord down, as a resurrection may be on the way.

The developers behind that game, Red Fly Studio, took to Reddit to reveal plans to revive the project. “We have been burning a candle for this game since it was killed in hopes we can get it turned back on again,” Red Fly Studio CEO and owner Dan Borth wrote on Reddit.

IF that is to happen we need to approach EA with a demo that will impress them. I think we have that or are close to it. Still it is completely not up to us. BTW we are currently working on a full next gen demo of all things Maul to show to the powers that be. It’s been a lot of work on our off time.

And that’s the challenge right there. EA has the sole rights to spin out Star Wars games on the big platforms, which means that a Darth Maul game would need to be greenlit by them. The bigger challenge however, is convincing people to buy a prequel trilogy game, because that series of Star Wars films aren’t exactly held in high regard.

“That’s a fair point,” Borth said when a reader brought that point up.

I don’t know what are chances are realistically. I would say this helps them if there were any. Hopefully EA will see the value in us reskinning our combat mechanic to be more in line with what they are thinking for Star Wars if they are not interested in Maul.

And I’d love to see it. Darth Maul is a great character, who happens to have received a ton of love in the years since he found himself on the wrong end of a Trainspotting lightsaber in 1999’s Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace. Red Fly has some interesting ideas.

And so do I. Want a Darth Maul game to fly off the shelves? Then give me a pre-order mission that involves hunting down Jar Jar Binks. I guarantee it’ll sell like death-sticks at a dodgy nightclub on Coruscant.

The best Star Wars game I’ve played this year comes in the form of Disney Infinity 3.0….. I’m not trolling. Disney Infinity has made me a believer in the Force again. Sniff!

Fanboys take note. Nobody outside your little circle gives a hoot about Darth Maul. He was an angry potato sprout that got cut in half at the end of Film 1.
Not really the baddest villain out there, now is he?

Yeah, But George Lucas peaked in the 70s. Thank fook JJ is at the helm. Yeah, I am a bona fide Star Wars geek. But the prequels sucked so bad. Especially Jar Jar and Anakin ( Kid Version ). I blame Lucas for the terrible acting in the opus. Even geek goddess Natalie Portman was weak.

They should totally dedicate this game ( If made ) to finding and killing Jar Jar Binks.
