So I posted a story yesterday about the lack of console movers in this generation and was once again told that I am being selective with my PS3 reporting.
So I went to try and find official European stats for this week (post MGS4) and although I found many websites claiming huge figures I didn’t find any with any factual base behind them… so I am back to VGChartz again.
According to them the PS3 has had a major sales surge this week and has moved a total of 116,642 units, way more than the 67,615 Xbox 360’s but still less than the Wii who moved 138,210.
So the sites claiming that the PS3 finally outsold the Wii may not be entirely correct.
While the PS3 nearly outsold the 360 2:1 this week it is important to note that it only had a 40k surge in sales over it’s normal weekly average. Way short of the sales around the holiday period where it topped 250k units…
So I still stick to my previous statement that MGS4 doesn’t seem to be a console mover either….
I have also seen some statements that the PS3 has now outsold the 360 in Europe but can also not find any facts to back that up. Though it does appear to be very close and should break that mark in the next few months…
Which is very impressive as the Xbox had a huge head start against the PS3, Microsoft really missed their opportunity in this generation.

If those figures are turn out to be true, I’d say MGS was pretty successful as this thing called “console mover.” Especially if they can keep it up for another couple of weeks.

Because when I posted the story it was about European sales and I stopped posting VGChartz US results as I kept on being told they were to heavily xbox 360 weighted…

The thing about PS3 outselling 360 in Europe comes from VGChartz as well, but they track Europe within the “Others” group, and the 360 outsells the PS3 in Aus, NZ and Africa which is why it’s still ahead in the “Others” region.
I find VGChartz to be very accurate if you compare their estimates to what eventually gets officialy released they are very close almost all the time.

I’d say last weeks results showed all the hold out MGS fans finally justifying a PS3, but I wouldn’t call the jump big enough to call it a “system seller” as there are not going to be a lot of new converts to PS3 just because of MGS4.
-See the blog post that I just can’t seem to shake from my comments 🙁

I’d still say those are pretty good numbers considering the price tag of a PS3. If those number keep up for another week or two, I’d call it a system seller.
Depenads ofc what you classify as a system seller. Thus far I’m totally in love with MGS4. But I won’t buy a 5k console for it alone. I would buy a 1k PS2 for it though.
I still think hardware prices are a bit high to expect a single game to move 1million console with one single game.
The PS2 was perfectly priced when GT4 and GOW2 came out and the 360 is begining to touch that price point with the arcade. The PS3 is still too expensive, and Sony should be happy with the jump in sales MGS brought.
