The Evil Within is going to be the scariest game ever

I’m a tough guy. Brave, courageous and fearless. And this one time, I only needed a mere week off of work to recover after spotting a small spider in my shower. Which is why I’m already hiring a shrink for when Shinji Mikami’s The Evil Within hits shelves.

Speaking to IGN, Mikami said that the current market has pretty much zero pure survival horror games on shelves right now.

“My definition of survival horror is that first of all it has to be scary. And then you get a scary creature, and you get a rush from blowing it away. A good balance of these two things is what makes survival horror,” Mikami said.

For combat, of course, you’re shooting guns and using knives and axes and orthodox weapons like that, but you can also place traps to ambush enemies.

We don’t intend to give the player and super extraordinary powers. However, if there’s no way to fight back, no way to attack that gives that little thrill, then it wouldn’t be survival horror. So we’ll give the player the weapons they need, but we’re not considering any heavy weapons like machine guns.

And for that combat, Mikami is going to give players a choice between being stealthy and being tactical. Players will only have so much ammo to go around, so a lot of fights are going to become straight up close-quarters, something that will require a certain amount of skill. But Mikami says that it will be satisfying.

Sometimes you have to run away because your ammo is low, and you’re like, ‘die already’ – and you pull off a headshot.

The monster is bearing down on you and bam! You hit it with your last shot. You feel relief and a sense of exhilaration like ‘yes!’ I think that really is the easiest way to describe what’s best about survival horror.

But here’s the rub. Mikami is well aware that too much action can be a bad thing, which is why Evil Within will be attempting to balance fists with frights.

Survival horror has been drifting away from what makes it survival horror. And so I want to bring back survival horror to where it was.

There are a lot of survival horror games nowadays, but the thing that I want to focus on is having the perfect balance between horror and action.

Mikami is aiming to make the scariest game in ages, and I think the horror maestro might be onto something here, with Bethesda and Tango Gameworks backing up and giving the Asian flavour some western design influences. It may be early days, but things are looking promising for The Evil Within.

Hopefully, the game will ship with a pair of spare undies when it arrives next year on PC, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.

If anyone can bring back Survival Horror , it’s Mikami. He is spot on with all his observations. I am a tad bit concerned about the traps …. Saw attempted it and well, it sucked balls

I want another Forbidden Siren! The remake for PS3 was shite! Why? THEY WESTERNISED IT! Keep the Japanese people in it! (and keep the British accents as well!)

I just hope it is as scary as RE6, I’ve never been more terrified of camera work in my life… EDIT: ‘Camera NOT work’.

Resident Evil 2 was my first game on PS1(my brother went to town and I gave him my money to buy me a nice game), I was 10 I think, and if this dude can make me as scared as I was then, then please take my money!! I will never forget getting into the sewers for the first time and hearing the dogs running, at first I couldn’t make out what it was until I got to the T-junction and the dogs jumped me from both sides!! That part is etched in my mind…….. And clicking sounds makes me stressed till this day!!

I would buy a HD version of that game for R800, without using my credits at BT Games!!! At least I found it on PSN last year for R120, I have played it 5 times since then!! Can’t get enough of that game!!

Everything is fine and dandy, but isn’t it a little TOO early to hyping something that is not yet tangible? It’s basically just an idea at this point… or am I wrong?

Nothing beats Alan Wake. The scariest part of the game is when there are no monsters. It does that a few times for long sections in the game… THEN BAMMMMMMM

The last survival horror experience I’ve had that gave me goosebumps was Siren: Blood Curse – that game is scary. If this game is just half as scary as Siren, I won’t be playing it while sitting on my new couch… : (

I’ve ran the figures and done the calculations, the results… disturbing.

Apparently I’m too much of a pussy for “Survival Horror” games, so sayeth the combined playtime of 10 minutes for Doom 3, AvP and Deadspace 3.
