Evil within

People love to be proud of their rigs – it’s a thing to brag about your graphics card and RAM and all the rest. However, not everyone has the top of the range equipment. Unfortunately for them, they probably won’t be able to play the latest and greatest horror title to be released.

The Evil Within has gone gold. Remember, unlike in the music industry, this doesn’t mean that the game has sold a certain number of units, it just means that they’ve pressed the discs. This means that they have also revealed the requirements for the game. They are certainly quite hefty:

Recommended PC System Specifications

  • 64-bit Windows 7/Windows 8
  • i7 with four plus cores
  • 4 GBs RAM
  • 50 GB of hard drive space*
  • GeForce GTX 670 or equivalent with 4GBs of VRAM
  • High Speed Internet Connection
  • Steam account and activation

They don’t list minimum requirements, offering only the following guideline:

If you’re trying to play with a rig with settings below these requirements (you should plan to have 4 GBs of VRAM regardless), we cannot guarantee optimal performance.

The PC install is 50 GB but the actual game will only take up 41 GB of HDD space. But you need four cores and an i7 to run the game? Either they are seriously expecting everyone to run it on ultra settings, or the game hasn’t been optimized in any way, shape or form. On console, you’ll also have to clear out some space considering these install sizes:

  • Xbox One — 40 GB HDD Space
  • PlayStation 4 — 40 GB HDD Space
  • PlayStation 3 — 7 GB HDD Space
  • Xbox 360 — 7 GB

I know the bigger games offer better experiences, but I just can’t get over the sizes required. It means that I will have to delete almost every game once I’m done playing it. Not the end of the world considering the quick installation speeds on PS4, but I’d sort of like to not need to delete old games to make room for the new ones.

My money is on the fact that THEY HAVE OPTIMIZED THIS AS EFFICIENTLY AS OUR GOVERNMENT

And yet people voted for them, there seems to be some correlation between gamers and voters come to think of it.

Most people seem to be swimming in debt, dunno if that counts.

What exactly does “optimal performance” mean? I mean really, never mind the i7 – but FOUR GIGS VRAM? I’m not planning to play at ultra detail, 120 fps, 4K – very VERY few people are.

I hope this isn’t going to be the next excuse for poor optimisation – “but it’s optimised for 4K!” Yeah right.

But you’re master race, I though everyone does. Or is it only the real “master race” that plays on Ultra? 😛

4GB GPU, wtf? I get the feeling they just release unoptimized games and hope the pure horsepower of PCs makes the game run ok.

So it’s the Rage engine? Then their optimal specs are idiotic, my PC ran that perfectly well & the engine can’t have changed that much.

If you could run Wolfenstein the new order, I’m pretty sure you could handle Evil Within. I’ve read the modifications to the engine were quite similar.

I have a feeling texture streaming is going to be the issue ( not the pop-in but the actual data transfer).

Pretty sure the game will use area-size ‘painted’ textures which, judging by the space required, seem to be uncompressed and optimized as much as a potato.
