The game designer formerly known as Puff CliffyB Diddly Daddy. Who cares?

This is something that got on my nerves.

Cliff Bleszinski, lead designer for Gears of War 2 told Stephen Totilo from MTV that he no longer wants to be called “CliffyB”, the nickname that we all know and one that has been used for him since the 90’s.

In his post, Totilo says:

“Yesterday he confirmed to me that he is dropping the old nickname.

It’s “time to grow up a bit,” he wrote in a quick note. The name may have suited a 20-something Cliffy B who used to make work on “Unreal Tournament” games and run a website featuring cats sandwiched in copy machines.

Cliff Bleszinski, however, is an early 30s developer at the top of his game. He and his team are working on getting “Gears 2″ done for the fall and they’re well past nicknames — at least any they want to be known by publicly.

I’m sorry, but what the heck is this? I admire Cliff’s work and I am really excited to see what he brings forward with Gears of War 2, but this?

I’m sorry Mr. Bleszinski, but you are not a rockstar, you are not a celebrity, so stop damn well trying to act like one. We are indeed getting to a point in our generation where gaming is becoming a large industry where more and more industry names are becoming well known, but this is just stupid.

I’ve noticed that with the release of Gears of War 2, “CliffyB” has been parading around like some sort of movie star, chainsawing through paper walls and announcing new titles. The guy is just all over the place and I’m sure that Epic and Microsoft are both quite set on using him as the face for Gears of War 2.

I don’t know what is going on in his head right now, sure he wants his name to sound more respectable, but this is the gaming industry. Fans don’t want to hear that you are trying to grow up.

Get serious Cliff, or rather, don’t.

I don’t share the same contempt as Nick about this… I like CliffyB :), he adds some much needed character to the development side of thing…

Same as Yahtzee has added the character to the reviewing side…

I’m just curious as to how exactly he plans on “dropping” a nickname? Sure HE can stop using it and so may many of the people at the office, but to millions of fans….dude…you ARE CliffyB! Deal with it! 😉

Well if you think of it, his name is now starting to become like John Romero and John Carmack.

I hate to say this Nick but CliffyB is a celebrity the same way Steven Spielberg is, and he will be the face of Gears of War 2 just like George Lucas will be the face of Star Wars…

I agree though you can’t just pick your nick name it’s given to you either it’s good or it’s not! deal with it! what else could you possibly call him? Poppa Phoenix?

Starting to become like Carmack? He may be there already. I must admit, I understand what Cliff Blezinski is saying. I’m suffering from a similar dilemma: “PillsburyDeeBoy” is no longer a boy, and as such, I would far rather you lot refer to me as “Mr. Dee”, but at the same time “PillsburyDeeBoy” rolls of the tongue so beautifully 😉 …

I understand what a lot of you are saying, but really, of all the celebs that you know even, how many publicly state that they want to change their nick names?

Lol :). I realised that. Hence the reason I suggested “Mr. Dee”.

I think he is entitled to be called exactly what he wants to be called. Gaming developement has moved passed the garage and into the corporate world. To be taken seriously nicknames don’t cut it.

I’m going to take sports as an example. Bob Skinstad didn’t want to be known as Bobby anymore, as such he requested to be called Bob. Same goes with Francios Steyn, who is now called Frans Steyn.

    Lots of other examples

Bah Humbug. I always have and will always be called by my nick , fore technical reasons known to those who know me. If folks are still calling me doobi when I’m 60+ (provided I get there) I couldn’t give a toss.

As Far as “CliffyB” goes, I’ve worked in megacorps where people refer to directors like that simply because it’s how the emails structured. He should focus on more important things in life like how to make Gears work on a cell phone… 😉 😛
