The Halo MMO was all systems go…

Ensemble Studios has revealed that the Halo MMO that we reported on a while back actually had a green light.

In an interview with Shacknews, Ensemble’s technology chief Dave Pottinger said, “It had actually been green-lit, and then it got cancelled after that.”

He also revealed that “Ensemble has been wanting to make an MMO for a long time. Microsoft… hasn’t had the best track record with those,” he said.

But I must start to think that if Microsoft got so close once before and with there honestly being a huge gap in the console market as far as MMO’s go. So who knows, with all the new Halo games in the works maybe we will see an MMO, but my bet is that Microsoft may be saving this for their next system.

As reported earlier today, Microsoft also recently announced its intention to close down Ensemble after it completes the Halo Wars RTS – a decision Pottinger said “honestly doesn’t make a lot of sense”.

And he’s right it doesn’t, it’s like closing Bungie after Halo 3 or Rare after Banjo. There’s a lot more behind that story than we know right now, that’s for sure.
