Destiny

You’ve already heard what Gavin has had to say regarding the early taste of Destiny. You’ve probably already ignored him, because what do Liverpool supporters know, amirite? I had a blast playing Destiny this weekend, an experience that I documented and went over. Here’s five things from the recent beta that impressed me, because you can totally trust a guy who has no strong feelings one way or the other to your favourite football teams.

The beta isn’t over yet, but it is going to be offline for a day or two so that the Xbox crowd can get up to speed and experience a joygasm or two. Destiny is out in September, snd this novel idea of a games distributor providing a sizeable chunk of their game, for free, has resonated well with me.

I only wish more devs would provide such demonstrations. Maybe it needs a snappier name,like…Demo-stratos. Yeah, that could work! So, what did you enjoy about Destiny?

My exploration and Fireteam missions were superb, no lag at all. I did experience some lag in the Crucible modes however.

Do the ps3/ps4 versions of the beta have the same maps and modes?

I like the videos and all. There’s just one thing that bugs me about the videos. That count down sound effect is so load. Your speaking voice is low or volume turned down because next count down number is going to blow the speakers.

other than that i like the videos.

I honestly didn’t notice it. Consider the countdown audio to be on the down-low from now on.

Why are you shooting the big spider in the face??? The legs take a lot more damage and then it falls later and opens up its “engine” which takes a lot of damage while it is down!!

Oh and my second PS4 remote just broke!!! The R2 button is stuck and doesn’t pop back up…. Kinda sucks ass!! The first one I repaired myself, but this 1 is going back to PartServe for a replacement…. They better not give me any crap, or I might just lose it!!

The R2 broke twice on me as well. The first was barely a month after PS4 launch. The second (the replacement) broke in June. BT games had them replaced for me both times but I have some serious concerns about the PS4 controller’s quality. I had only one controller at that time and I’ve bought myself another one to shed the workload but this only means that I’ll have to replace two controllers every ten months and not one controller every five months. I feel your pain.

Yeah, the PS4 controller is well designed but really poorly made imo. I’ve had to buy those analogue stick covers as all the rubber turned into a hot mess.

I hope they fixed the manufacturing to resolve these issues in the future.

Yeah, I hope so too but in the mean time I’m saddled with some very expensive but poorly made technology. I love my PS4 and somebody will have to pry it out of my cold, dead hands but i feel a bit shafted every time the controller takes a dump.

Went to fffffff Partserver earlier today, 1,5 hours to get it replaced!!! I was second in the line!!!! My blood is boiling…. also they recon that there is no new 1 year warranty on the replacement remote, it falls under the old remotes 1 year warranty… How the hell does that work!! Phoning Playstation South Africa later today!!

Hell no! I don’t know what those guys are smoking but if I remember correctly the Sony PS4 warranty says that any replaced part falls under the original device warranty or one year after replacement, whichever is longer.

As I said, BT games phoned Ster Kinekor and got authorization for the replacement hassle free.

A PC gamer’s impressions after +-1 hour of play on PS3:

The last FPS game I played on console was Fire Warrior, and even then I only played for 5 minutes, so I have no knowledge of the controls to expect.

That being said I found using a controller… not as bad as I feared and slightly better than I had hoped.

The initial combat is easy enough that I had a chance to learn the controls and begin to adapt the skills I’ve developed on PC.

At the end of my first firefight I felt the need to reload and instinctively hit the Square
button and the game reloaded. This may seem pretty obvious to many of
you but for someone who had no idea what the controls are this means the
game is fairly easy to pick up and begin to play.

That being said aiming with the controller is no where near as smooth
and fluid as aiming with a mouse. I’ve spent more time trying to aim for
the opponent by strafing than I have by moving the crosshair.

Towards the end of my short play session I found that I was starting to
use a similiar fighting style to what I would use on PC, namely sniping
at long range to reduce the numbers followed by a suicidal charge to get
into melee range and finish off the remaining enemies.

The menus are quite nicely put together but seem like they were
originally designed to be used on a PC, although others might disagree. I
did find that I kept forgetting that the right analogue stick is used
    to navigate the menus.

The graphics are incredible and the storyline so far is engrossing.

My overall impression of the game is that it is amazing and I’d love
nothing more than to be able to play it with keyboard and mouse, but
even with the controller it’s still a worthy game but one that I will
wait to be released on PC.

I know from personal experience that it is very difficult to break out of the KB+M mindset, but honestly, after a few years on controllers I now feel like KB+M is a really terrible way of controlling a FPS game. Forget precision, its just really naff and does not feel fun.

I only played for about 1 hour but I can honestly say that of the 10 or so headshots that I got I only deliberately aimed for the head once.
If I was playing keyboard and mouse I would likely have gotten 40 headshots and only 10 body shots.

I also have trouble with jumping and aiming at the same time since I use my right thumb for both the X button and the right analog stick.

Ive been playing PC and console side by side for a while now. Again there is nothing better than the mouse but with practice you can get better with the controller. I still struggle from time to time especially getting headshots with PVP. But if other people can do it then so can we.

The issue that I have with mouse these days is that it’s a bit of a piss take with how easy it is… sure a controller is harder work and more of a challenge, but that’s a good thing in my view, and the concept of pointing and clicking your mouse on enemies to shoot them is just awful IMO.

            July 22, 2014 at 10:01

Pointing and clicking accurately is key though, the analog sticks will never replace a mouse its all down to preference. i find trying to aim with an analog controller awful wiggle wiggle and no accuracy
