Prince-of-Persia-The-Forgotten-Sands-HD-Wallpapers

Gavin asked me to do a top 10; my very own, personal top 10 favourite games. It’s left me really rather excited, and there is a very simple reason I find this so awe-inspiring; at college I was told for two straight years that the chances of me doing a top 10 anything is non-existent, especially while I am an intern. I did some thinking and after a few minutes I realised that I do not have any classic games in my top 10 list, much to Geoff’s dissatisfaction. This is simply because I am too young to fully appreciate these games and in the early nineties my family had almost no money for such frivolities as games.

I will be listing this from top to bottom. Also I love Fantasy games so do not be surprised about some of these.

Number 10: Fable 3

Now I know that most people have seen something wrong with the semi-new Fable games and for the most part I do agree with them. However I still went out and bought the game. I found the story to be not quite as deep as the previous two but honestly I did not care. Combining two spells into one is probably one of the best things I have ever experienced in a game about killing Hobbes and Trolls. That is why Fable 3 ranks number 10 in my list, though barely. I was seriously considering Diablo 3 then the auction house came knocking on my memory banks.

Number 9: Borderlands

Feel the sand between your feet, shoot a skag in the mouth and be one with the six-barrelled-shotgun-like-gun. That is what I remember most about Borderlands, mostly because I played it for the first time in good old Durban. A few weeks after my first exposure to the game I tracked it down at Musica. Never before had my then Pentium 4 CPU had to work so hard. I spent a lot of time just driving over, through and past things that dared to be in my way. To this day it remains my go-to-game to get rid of frustrations. Though a little less desert would have been nice.

borderlands3

Number 8: Fable 2

I only have one problem with Fable 2, the hair. The hair in the original Fable was a lot better. Wait, no, there is a second thing that irritated me. Yes doggy I know there is a chest, I am just trying to kill these here bandits first. Other than those small irritants I had a lot of fun playing Fable 2, I had a lot more fun killing those Gargoyles than I had any right to and the story told me so much more about the Fable universe.

Number 7: GTA San Andreas

This game is the only thing that has ever managed to make me to go to a gym. Though that was only because the chicken was being sold at a low price. This is one of the few games that my old Pentium 4 could run smoothly, on a cold winters night, with the fan on it. There really is not a single thing that I did not like about GTA San Andreas. It had flying tanks and when you crashed into the ocean you could actually swim. With some help from my cousin I eventually unlocked the second island and that is when the first real tragedy of my gaming life struck. My DVD reader actually spun the disc too fast and broke it. GTA San Andreas is lost to me.

GTA--San-Andreas-grand-theft-auto-73574_1024_768

Number 6: Forza Motorsport 4

The game that is currently breaking my Xbox, one HD car at a time. As someone that has a vehicular-inclined family I have been around cars that are broken my whole life. It is also the reason that I have been blessed with the unique advantage of playing almost every car game of the last 10 years. Forza 4 has a lot of great things about it; really nice graphics, beautiful cars, Jeremy Clarkson and a lot of DLC. There is only one thing that it does not have, neon lights. Every game is better with neon lights.

Number 5: Ratchet and Clank 2

I absolutely love this game. Without this game I would probably be playing Rugby somewhere on a dry field of grass. I got this game from a friend in 2006, and I have been craving the simplicity of Ratchet and Clank ever since. It was Ratchet and Clank that made me realise I was a gamer, simply because when I finished it I decided that playing it through again  was something that needs to be done. I love this game so absolutely that I am completely biased and I can not find anything wrong with it. No one is to point out any faults, or risk death.

1215549-ratchet_and_clank_2

Number 4: Fable

Ok, after everything so far I am sure that you were all expecting this to be somewhere. This is actually the first game that I finished all alone; just me and my PC whirring away in the background (yes it made actual sounds). I defeated Jack of Blades and got Avo’s Tear, because I am good. The horror of the bandits burning down Oakvale is still something that I am seeking revenge for to this day. I will be back, just going to kill Jack, again.

Fable-01

Number 3: Dark Souls

Doing the same thing over and over again has never felt so different. I am still having trouble with this game and unlike all other games here it is the only one that I have n
ot completed. Not for lack of trying though; it took me three solid hours to ring the first bell. Every time I play this game my entire body tenses up. I know that I will be playing for another few hours and nothing will be able to interrupt me. Dark Souls is one of the few games that I find truly challenging yet fun at the same time. I find myself strategizing how to get past something almost every day. I have not done that since my Diablo 2 days.

335450

Number 2: Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock

Just saying the name makes me feel all tingly inside. Guitar Hero might not be the most hardcore of games out there and I am sure that most “serious” gamers will say that it’s not really a game. I have luckily found a great solution to this; turn up the volume and show them how to do Dragonforce on hard.  I played through my matric exams with this game. Nothing on this earth is a better high than getting a perfect score on a bastard-difficult song . Unfortunately my copy of the disc got stolen and I am now an ex Guitar Hero player. Rocksmith here I come!

472834-guitar_hero_3

Number 1: Prince of Persia: The forgotten Sands

I had to think thoroughly about this one and after an arduous several minutes of thinking I found my number one game; Prince of Persia: The Forgotten. I bought this game with my very first pay check and I have been killing sand monsters ever since. I am currently on my fourth playthrough; I cannot seem to get the right combo for that one achievement. With everything that I have played throughout my life I have enjoyed POP the most.

thumbnail_2_2411c160_v1

So there is my Top 10. I have played a lot of games and through experience I know that almost no one will agree with me about any of them.

Also please do not ruin Ratchet and Clank for me in the comments.

My BIG, BIIIIIG issue with Fable: The Lost Chapters was that you start as a kid, and age faster than your sister (yes I know there’s reasoning behind that), and everyone else… you end the game old as F*** while everyone else is spring chickens… there’s something wrong there.

But I enjoyed all 3 and avoided the Kinect monster.

Yeah, you’re an old balie fighting a dragon, while the dude that recruited you is immune to time. Fable was such a strange game, but I liked that your appearance changed as you played. However, I think KOTOR did a much better job at it.

By the way, the fact that KOTOR isn’t on anyone’s top 10 list is a freaking travesty!

            October 23, 2013 at 17:41

Haha true, I am also guilty of not having KOTOR on my top 10 but thats because I have Jade Empire there holding it down.

Fable 3…. if that’s on your top 10 list then I feel the urge to intervene. Fable 2 was ok-ish, but still a lukewarm and dumb RPG. As for Fable 1… I’m still waiting for my oak tree to grow 🙁

All three games had nice ideas but they failed to implement them properly.

            October 23, 2013 at 14:44

Hey I speak the truth… Mass 2 and 3 were extremely streamlined and most of the RPG elements were watered down and it felt more like a 3rd person shooter with a deep story than an actual RPG…AND let me state this for all to see..MASS EFFECT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE AN RPG FIRST AND FOREMOST …. NOT A SHOOTER

          • SaintsRowNigri

            October 23, 2013 at 14:49

Look, ME 2 and ME 3 may have watered down the RPG element a bit, I’ll give you that. But by God man, comparing it to something as flat as GoW is honestly an insult to the hard work put in by Bioware in creating a bloody damn good series.

Gears of war was used as an analogy to the shooting. I could have used anything really…My point is, yes they created a fine series. But it was meant to be an RPG , the sequels felt dumbed down and lacking a lot of depth. Nothing against the story

While all these Commentator Top 10 list are wrong, they are at least miles closer to the correct List than Victoria’s.

Here is the Correct All Time Top 10 Game List:

          1. The Last of Us
          2. GTA V
          3. Freelancer
          4. Mass Effect 2
          5. Star Control 2
          6 Syndicate (Original)
          7. Dark Forces 2
          8. C&C Generals
          9. System Shock 2
          10. Payday 2

I wanted to add World of Warcraft as it sucked 5 years of my life, but I removed it from my list as it sucked 5 years of my life.

            Totally understand. 🙂

For me, the ME experience was, and still is, totally immersive. It’s a combination of the story, the settings, the character… Geez, the characters! If you play ME1 and use your save games to go all the way through to the end of ME3, you have spent over 100 hours with the same set of characters… As odd as it sounds, they literally become known to you, as a friend would. And should they die during the epic quest, you literally mourn for them… Thinking if there was anything more you could’ve done to save them. Well, I do, at least. 🙂 Just an awesome set of games.

But to each their own 🙂

For its time, the original Deus Ex was better, no doubt. But for some reason the HR storyline was more emmersive for me. And the enviroment was SPOT N. Hence its inclusion in my list.

Very well, in no particular order:

            1) VtM Bloodlines
            2) Witcher 2
            3) Fallout 2
            4) Doom 2
            5) Borderlands 2
            6) Thief
            7) Jagged Alliance 2
            8) Sierra Quests (all of them under one heh)
            9) Farenheit
            10) System Shock 2

Lots of 2’s now that I think about it. There’s so many I’m leaving out as well, like the Baldur’s Gates, Splinter Cell, Tomb Raider, Hitman, etc, etc. I don’t really like making lists because I tend to go with – Like: yes/no.

Edit: and Stalker – after praising it so much earlier this morning lol

            October 23, 2013 at 15:07

But… Sprite is green and Jack of Blades wears red. It would only be a Jack of Blades if I poured some tomato juice into it, and who the hell wants an imitation bloody mary or waste a good Jack on such an abortion?

          • ToshZA

            October 23, 2013 at 16:10

Sprite is clear. If yours is green I’d go see a professional about it. Either an Optometrist, or a food investigator.

Jack of Blades is a cool villain – such a pity he’s wasted in Fable. If there was any justice in this world, he would have been an icon like Sephiroth, Kafka, the Joker, Walter White or Vaas.

Fable 3 was below-average tosh served on a used baby’s diaper. It was a lazy game, with lazy setpieces, lazy controls and even lazier end-game. Not to mention after all these years, the DLC is still broken. I will never be able to finish that DLC because it’s broken.

the main story line was mostly playable, and it had amazing potential, but everything just felt unfinished.
the concept behind mixxing spells and stuff was great, and the gameplay was smooth and all that, it just didnt have te umph to push it back to Fable 1 level.

Some may say that the tasks were Herculean, but in the end, after years of relentless dedication, he regained his manhood and earned my respect!.

Why thank you good man. In all honesty, I never got to play the first Deus Ex… Shocking, I know… One of the many gaming regrets I have!

With ME and Deus Ex HR, they just resonated with me (I’m sure you’ve had games like that too). I just became totally engrossed in the story, the characters, the settings… Even the music just added to that epic sense. Love those games! And I regularly go back to them to playthrough again and again.

There are SO many games I could put on my list… The first Assassin’s Creed (which I still feel was the best in the series… Although ACII was a lot of fun too). Knights of the Old Republic (to this day, the best Star Wars game ever made!). Forza Motorsport 4 (which I honestly believe to be the best overall racing game this generation…). Half-Life 2. The Witcher 2 (I haven’t played the first one 🙁 ). Forza Horizon (probably the most fun open-world racing game I’ve ever played). Quake and Quake 2. Beyond Good and Evil. Myst. The list just goes on and on… It’s really tough to narrow it down to just 10… But I’m happy with my list above. 🙂

I’ve only played a bit of Forza and I absolutely loved it, but being a pc gamer primarily my racing games of choice is limited to Codemasters games. My big this is missing the ME bus and now I don’t get what people are on about, sad, I know.

🙁 That does make me sad. 🙁

Me thinks we should hook you up with a nice, Mass Effect chamber… It’s where you’re strapped into a chair and made to play all 3 games through to the end, 1 after the other, without breaks…

            **cough**

I mean it’s where we quietly discuss this epic game in a nice, padded room and perhaps partake in some excellent Mass Effect gameplay… Yes, that’s what I mean. 😉 🙂

    Nice list… according to me.

But I’d disagree with having all 3 Fables in my top 10, they’d all find themselves in my top 20-30 though.

Thus my top 10 in no particular order:

    1: GTAV
    2: Skyrim
    3: StarCraft
    4: CnC: Red Alert 2
    5: Borderlands 2
    6: The Witcher Series
    7: KOTOR Series
    8: Vtm: Bloodlines
    9: Duke Nukem 3D
    10: Dragon Age: Origins

Yes, Fable not in there, no racing games, no Diablo, no warcraft, etc… that’s in my top 20 due to me over thinking this lol

We’ve had this discussion many times, but the Def Jam games (excluding that tripe Def Jam icon) were brilliant. I sometimes wish Aki would make a comeback and create an even better grappler.

    1. Final Fantasy VI (Remember spending hours downloading this for my Pentium 1 on an SNES emulator. Playing it just pissed me off so much that we got stuck with the crappy Sega Genesis/Mega- Drive and not the SNES. So much 16-bit RPG fun to be had. Yes, I know emulation is wrong, but when you’re a kid, you don’t really care.)
    2. Final Fantasy VIII
    3. Bioshock Infinite
    4. Guild Wars 2
    5. Legend of Zelda : Ocarina of Time (Traded my PSX at end of life just to play this game)
    6. Diablo II
