Jack Tretton, the CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America, recently stated in a video interview that The Last Guardian is currently on hiatus.
Now we know Jack is American and as such not totally capable of speaking English but for the rest of us the definition of hiatus is quite obvious
Hiatus: A pause or gap in a sequence, series, or process
So not cancelled, just simply taking a break. Catching some rays and chilling on the beach.
However it wasn’t long before Sony went into full defence mode with Sony’s head of worldwide studios, Shuhei Yoshida, stating
“The game is in active development. [Lead designer Fumito] Ueda-san shared updates a few months ago. Nothing has changed. My answer is, ‘Yes, the game is in active development.’ It’s not hiatus at all. But we are not ready to reintroduce it. When we are ready, we will do that. Please wait.”
Soon after that Eurogamer followed up for themselves to find out and was told by Sony’s Jim Ryan that the game was definitely not cancelled.
"I don’t believe it’s been cancelled,"
"Had it been cancelled, some sort of announcement would have been made. I think the watch-word is patience."
So we have Jack saying it’s on hold, Yoshida stating that it is in active development and Jim stating that he doesn’t think it’s been cancelled.
Now this title has been floating around for years and the fans keep going nuts about it. You would think that its status would be clearly defined to all public facing PR people for E3. But apparently no one in the Sony machine has any idea if this game is still in development or not and when or if we’ll ever see it.
I think it’s time to put it out of its misery before it arrives with Duke Nukem on it’s back eating zombies in an all out multiplayer skirmish.

Long development cycle & conflicting reports of its status all point to it being a poor game when (if) it’s eventually released.

Sometimes games are just too long in development. You eventually lose interest.
