Capcom brought the fighting genre back from its grave with the console release of Street Fighter Iv in 2009. Since then, it’s exploded – and we’ve seen many more classic fighting games brought back from the dead, leading to sore thumbs the world over.
2011 has been a great year for fighting games, but which is best?
Here are the nominees for best fighting game:
Super Street Fighter 4 3D Edition
The King of Fighters XIII
Fight Night Champion
Mortal Kombat
Ultimate Marvel vs CAPCOM 3
And the award goes to:
Winner: Mortal Kombat
Ed Boon’s Netherrealm studios brought Mortal Kombat back to its roots – sticking with the (mostly) 2D fighting mechanics and the blood and guts of the series’ best games. It’s balanced, and as a result makes Mortal Kombat a good tournament fighter; the first time a game in the series has found real traction with hardcore fighting game fans. It also delivered a hefty single player campaign, making it probably the first fighting game that actually fun to play on your own.
Runner-Up: Ultimate Marvel vs CAPCOM 3
