The Nathan Drake Collection looks like a great remastering

Uncharted-11

My stance on the barrage of remasters we’ve been getting has softened. Not too long ago, like many of you, I was both upset and mildly angered by the torrent of new-gen remasters of old-gen games that seem to be flooding the marketplace. “Where are the new games?” I’d ask, grumbling at the thought of replaying a game I’d completed not months ago. “I’ve already played this!”

And there’s the rub. I’ve played this. You may have too. But for every one of us that has, there are thousands, perhaps even millions who haven’t; People who’ve only just jumped in to console gaming; people who’ve switched allegiances and now have whole new libraries of franchises to explore. On top of that, they help fund new games and new experiences.

Hating on these remasters then, is a selfish thing to do. They may not be for you or for me – but they’re for somebody, who’ll get to experience the same bit of joy we did when we first played them. I’m especially ok with collections – like the impending Uncharted one, which puts the first three of Nathan Drake’s adventures in to one retail release, allowing new PlayStation owners to get up to speed with the series before Uncharted 4 melts our eyeballs next year.

From all reports, it seems to be a rather spiffing port – handled by one of the best porting studios in all the lands; Bluepoint. They’re the same guys who did the Ico and Shadow of Colossus remaster, the God of War Collection and the same people who managed to get Titanfall working ( rather well!) on the Xbox 360. The Nathan Drake Collection is in good hands – even if the multiplayer from each game is being excised.

Here’s a look at how it’s shaping up.

Says the press release:

“From the groundbreaking storytellers at Naughty Dog, comes the genre-defining epic that revolutionized adventure storytelling, rebuilt by Bluepoint Games with the power of the PS4 system.

Experience one of the most revered game series of all time as you follow the perilous journey of Nathan Drake across the globe, from humble beginnings to extraordinary discoveries. Meet an unforgettable cast of characters as Drake puts life and friendship on the line in a race against ruthless enemies to uncover unimaginable treasure.

UNCHARTED The Nathan Drake Collection™ includes the single-player campaigns for UNCHARTED: Drake’s Fortune, UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves, and UNCHARTED 3: Drake’s Deception.”

It’s coming to the PlayStation 4 in October.

First time I hear of Bluepoint. Ico and SotC collection was a pretty effing great HD remake though. This is good news!

I for one appreciate a good remaster. Last of Us seems like a game you should play at least once. This I will get, seeing it got rave reviews and seems like a good series to get into!

TLOU is one of my all time favorite games. Geoff will tell you it’s overrated, and it probably is to some degree. It’s still one of the finest made games in existence and even when its problems creep up, it’s still better than 90% of most games 😀

As long as people don’t forget that overrated isn’t the same thing as bad. 😛

I’ve played some of it. Had a solid emotional start and it kind of went all “I’ve done this before” so I have left it. For now. I really want to get into the Witcher III over the next few weekends. That voice of Geralt’s. Always sounding like he is trying to seduce the person he is talking to…

Witcher 3 is also a fine choice. I love JRPGs, but hoo boy, I cannot recommend Wither 3 enough. Geralt can whispers sweet nothings to me, all day, every day.

    I hate remasters, all they do is remind me of how the Mass Effect trilogy isn’t getting one ;_;

            July 16, 2015 at 08:27

lol In all seriousness though, ME 2 and 3 were great games. Was just too casual for my liking ^_^

            July 16, 2015 at 08:28

Yeah. I know. But dropping some of the hardcore RPG elements were what made ME2 such a great game.
I mean, I cannot stand seeing a krogan in pink armour again..

I guess if stats and millions of it is your thing. Mass Effect 2 is my most played game of all time. And the damn emotional torment you go through in that final mission?

          • Umar

            July 16, 2015 at 08:33

It kinda is lol I love me some intergalactic RPG goodness, and EA took it away from me and gave me a shooter with RPG elements. Yes, I’m salty about it.
But yup, great, emotional game though. They nailed it.

            July 16, 2015 at 09:28

          • Umar

            July 16, 2015 at 10:02

Just my opinion man. I didn’t like the pew pew focus of the game. It started to feel like a shooter with RPG elements.

Isn’t that what Mass Effect 1 was? 🙁

          • Umar

            July 16, 2015 at 10:27

Yup, pew, but RPG pew pew, with more in depth customization and stats etc. It’s just me though lol It’s not casual or garbage, I enjoyed 2 and 3 but I preferred 1 as it felt more like an old school RPG.

            July 16, 2015 at 10:03

ME1 will always be the best for me. Everything after 1 felt like it was turning into a shooter.

            July 16, 2015 at 09:39

ME1 had the best story. But ME2 and 3 had the best combat.

          • Umar

            July 16, 2015 at 10:04

Can’t fully agree. That’s just me though lol I like RPGs more than shooters 🙁

          • Mossel

            July 16, 2015 at 10:07

ME1 had too many different weapons and bullets, and special bullets and attachments! Too many choices is a prison! I like that ME2 was more “dumbed down”.

          • Umar

            July 16, 2015 at 10:25

That appealed to me more, it wasn’t dumbed down really but just really really streamlined. Doesn’t mean it was a bad game though. I was kidding when I said it was garbage and casual lol

In fact I rate the denial ending as one of the best endings ever.

The rest of the endings were fine after the Extended Cut DLC. I rate them better than the typical “kill the bad guy” endings that usually happen.

The slide show endings were laughable at best. But to each man his own. Most people head canon their own ending after that whole party DLC.

          Thats what I did.
