The new patch for Arkham Knight on PC fixes things…but you can’t have it.

The good WB giveth, and the WB, he taketh away. While that statement could be applied to the PC version of Arkham Knight in its entirety, it’s also applicable to the latest patch for the beleaguered and broken PC version of Rocksteady’s last Batman game.

When Arkham Knight was released on PC in June, it was released in a poor enough state that Warner Bros saw fit to pull the game from retail and digital shelves. Patches were promised for last month, but have now been delayed until later this month. Some people got hold of the patch early though.

As many of you know, on Steam you’re able to opt in to download beta versions of products, and it seems that many who did so for Arkham Knight were graciously given the game’s latest patch…by accident (via Kotaku). Somebody at Warner Bros goofed, and let the patch go out to unwitting players – but it apparently worked wonders, making the game not just playable, but allowing PC gamers with the requisite hardware to push the Bat to the max, with nary a framedrop. Hooray!

The bad news? Because it was released early, in an incomplete package, it was soon after replaced with another beta patch that undid all of the good. The PC version is back to how it was, and the interim patch, scheduled for release last month, is still unreleased.

That the new patch does seem to fix things is a glorious ray of hope for PC gamers who bought the game, but is likely not good enough to unravel their knotted, festering anger towards Rocksteady, Warner Bros and Iron Galaxy, the company responsible for the abysmal port in the first place.

Almost 4 months…. What the stuff? How do you take almost 4 months to fix a game that should not have been released in the state it was???? What is this world coming to?

Simple really, you don’t do anything related to a pc port for the entirety of development, while you feed the developer the lie that you’re “hard at work, fixing porting issues” cash in your check the day before release and hope no one notices, I can’t blame wb for not being able to do the port themselves, but if a game takes 3-5 years to develop, 4 months for a patch, after how extraordinarily well the port was done, is actually quite an achievement….

That may have been true for the previous generation of consoles but the current gen runs off the exact same architecture as pcs. Hell XBone runs windows 10 and it was not ported or specifically designed. The file structure is near identical to a pc windows 10 install.

Porting a console game right now is the easiest thing to do since the birth of the Sony/MS console generation.

I do wonder how close they actually are, on a hardware level and operating system level. Also, the dedicated hardware will always make dev easier.

Uhm… Unfortunately that’s a half truth, for one, pcs have a series of proprietary controllers built into the operating system, in addition to that there is a series of bus controllers that are hardware specific, you see, the architecture is close to that of an x86 architecture, but with a singular build, not with a change in hardware or different driver libraries etc.,which makes that way of looking at it obsolete…

Let us not get ahead of ourselves. They pulled the game because steam refunds would have hurt them quite badly. If steam refunds were not a thing they would have just left it.

Thank god for Steam refunds. I remember a whole bunch of devs crying how Steam refunds are terrible and will ruin them. That doesn’t appear to be happening.

Sigh. Just sigh. This was just stupid and handled badly from the start, this leak is just in keeping with that.

Sad. From all accounts a great game, will be snapped up in future sales by a lot of people that otherwise would have bought by now, I fear. I feel for the PC gamers who pre-purchased though.

Not by me, even on special, even free. I know corporations don’t care about their customers, but at least keep up the pretense – it’s the social fiction that oils the wheels of commerce. The nice thing about having a ton of options is I can choose where to spend my money.

“not good enough to unravel their knotted, festering anger”? Why should I ever forget they knowingly released it in the state it was? I’m being unreasonable? They should get a free pass because “well, it’s okay now!”? No harm no foul right? Bullshit.

The difference between the console & PC versions? They can release the PC version without certification. Certification costs them money, every subsequent patch costs them money. Console versions have to work or they don’t get certified. PC version is basically a voetstoots release as far as they’re concerned, they took full advantage of that, and it blew the fuck up in their face. Thank god for Steam refunds, without which they wouldn’t have done a damn thing – and we all know it.

I don’t feel angry about what they did any more, but I get angry every single time I hear someone trying to shrug it off. This is how they decided to treat paying customers – with a big fuck you. It’s not okay and it NEVER will be because a colossal fuck up of this magnitude should never happen in the first place – it wasn’t an accident, it was done deliberately.

    “Stop being angry!” Why?
