The new Thor’s identity has finally been revealed

Thor (1)

Thor Odinson, you ain’t worthy no more boyo. That’s been the status quo for the last couple of months, as the Thunder God has found himself unworthy of lifting mighty Mjolnir (Or Mew-mew as Geoff calls it). But that hammer ain’t gathering dust. In fact, it’s in the hands of a new Thor. A lady Thor, who is busy kicking all kinds of ass right now, with a comic that consistently sells well. And her mysterious identity, has finally been revealed.

Vulture spoke to Thor writer Jason Aaron and got the scoop on who this Thor actually is. Spoilers below.

WHOSEVER READS THIS NEXT BIT OF TEXT AND GETS UPSET ABOUT A FICTIONAL CHARACTER’S MANTLE BEING ASSUMED BY ANOTHER FICTIONAL CHARACTER, AIN’T REALLY WORTHY YO!

– Odin, during his rap battle days

So here’s the secret revealed: It’s Jane Foster. Thor’s longtime love interest, has been wielding Mjolnir all along, despite the fact that she happens to be suffering from breast cancer. Portrayed by Natalie Portman in the films, Foster gains all of the original Thor’s powers, but transforms back into her bedridden state whenever she lays down the hammer. And for Aaron, Foster was the only logical and worthy choice to bear the burden of Thor:

Thor (2)

It grew out of the idea of the previous Thor becoming unworthy, which was something I was always building toward. I liked the idea of dealing with his worthiness and the idea of what it means for a god to be worthy in the Marvel universe. You know, the god of thunder waking up every morning and looking at the hammer and not knowing if he’s gonna be worthy to lift it. Then, of course, one day he should wake up and not be able to lift it. That opened the door for someone else to pick up the hammer and carry it around in his place. Really, the only character that was discussed was Jane.

Jane was little more than eye candy and a vapid love interest in her original Thor appearances, obsessed with polishing Thor’s hammer. Literally. Over the years however, she’s evolved to become her own person.

“She’s grown and changed and evolved a lot over the years, become a doctor in her own right,” Aaron said. “So this to me is not just the next step for her character, but really the next evolution of the core promise that has always been at the heart of Thor’s mythology.”

I’m digging the new Thor direction. Whatever your thunder god preference may be, the actual comic is still sharply written, and beautifully drawn. Plus, I’m really hoping we see Natalie Portman suit up as a movie Thunder God sometime in the near future. That’d be rad.

Tons of local comic book stores around the country. They’ll gladly order it in for you, or you can order a trade paperback of the collected issues every six months or so.

I know what you mean. I miss the days of going to Pic n pay and finding a new X-Men Age Of Apocolypse Issue by the magaine section. I remember they had a limited white embossed edition. Which I bought for an amazing R4.95 which at the time was expensive for me cause pocket money was R5 lol

Yeah it was so awesome. Everything about it was just amazing! I LOVED the art in there as well. Apocolypes was designed the best in there as well. Morph was amazing as well. Gees… is he in any of the new stuff? I still happily have my collection of comic. Im struggling to get the Legion Quest ones cause someone stole my first chapter double issue legion quest one. It was a 4 part series leading into the Age of Apocolypes series where Professor Xavier’s son kills him starting the age of apocolypes! was amazing 🙂

Age of Apocalypse made for exciting reading, although at the time, I was strictly on a DC diet – that changed with Age of Apocalypse.

That girl is called Marcy. And she is played by Kat Dennings! My wife. She just doesn’t accept it yet. But time spent chained up in a basement can be persuasive…

The contrast between her being sick and her being healthy when wielding Mjolnir sounds very interesting.

Incidentally, aquaman also lost his hand once. They briefly replaced it with a hook, followed by a cybernetic hand (because reasons) and then a weird hand made out of water. Fortunately DC came to their senses, and gave the man his hand back.

This does kinda prove the point that modern day feminism seeks to turn women into men. At least it looks like they are making it interesting.

Reading up of Thor, I found an interesting fact:
Thursday comes from the name Thor’s day, or in Afrikaans Donderdag (Thunder day).

It’s called “the Mary Sue” – creating an idealised female character that is for all intents and purposes is flawless (however, the fact that Jane Foster has cancer, opens up all sorts of interesting possibilities and it makes the series a lot more interesting)

I’m conflicted about this news, on the one hand, I had a feeling the new Thor was going to be Jane Foster (the biggest clue was that while she spoke in lyrical Asgardian to everyone else, her thoughts were always in “human English”. On the other hand, I was hoping they would have gone a different route…

I’ve read up until issue 006 so far, and I’m still not sold on New Thor – not because she’s a woman, but rather that the writing has been pretty sub-par so far. Sure, Thor was never at Shakespearean levels, but issue 005 left me with a facepalm, one hell of a groan and muttering “The FUCK IS THIS SHIT. REALLY MARVEL? REALLY?”.
