Baseball is a game reserved for Physical Education at school or some backyard fun once cricket becomes a bit stale. It’s a game South Africans aren’t too familiar with, but the New York Yankees are easily the sports’ most iconic team and their symbol has become one synonymous with snapback peak caps. While we may not know much about Baseball, we do know about esports, and the New York Yankees have now become the first MLB team to invest in an esports organization, and those chosen Echo Fox. Echo Fox has deeps roots in traditional sports with their owner being none other than former NBA legend Rick Fox, formerly of the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers.

The New York Yankees have hit the plate swinging with not only one, but three total investments into competitive gaming. While their exact figures have not been announced, it’s reported that the investment in Echo Fox includes other Vision Venture Partners including Twin Galaxies (games statistics organization) and a production company called Vision Entertainment. Vision Venture Partners  is a private equity firm created by Rick Fox, and includes a formidable roster of former executives including the former general manager of Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment, Jace Hall.

Echo Fox entered the esports world in 2015 after owner and founder Rick Fox saw his son’s interest in competitive gaming. The started off with a professional League of Legends team, buying a spot in the prestigious North American LCS (League Championship Series) from Gravity Gaming. The organization had a short stint in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, but bowed out soon after and have focused on other titles such as Call of Duty, mobile hit Vain Glory, and a number of fighting games.

While the exact investment remains unknown, it’s easy to understand that the most iconic Baseball team, and global franchise, places emphasis on the growing esports industry in North America which has seen a large influx of non-endemic investments over the past four years.
