The NSA has been spying on millions of gamers

You think you’re safe in your Second Life or your World of Warcraft? Well think again, because you my friend, are being spied on by the NSA.

Uncovered by The Guardian, New York Times, ProPublica and documents that Eric Snowden released, the report shows that the NSA has been spying on players through various games and services. The NSA had so many staff members snooping on players, that along with third-party agencies, they had to liase with one another in order to avoid disrupting the plans in motions.

The reason for suspecting that games were terrorist hiding grounds? According to one of the reports, it was because the titles on offer today “offer realistic weapons training “, linking that potential training to what the 9-11 terrorists learnt off of a copy of Microsoft’s Flight Simulator. And also because virtual training offers cheaper alternatives for those dirty terrorists, according to the NSA report:

When the mission is expensive, risky or dangerous, it is often a wiser idea to exercise virtually, rather than really blow an operative up assembling a bomb or exposing a sleeper agent to law enforcement scrutiny. Militaries around the world use virtual simulators with great success and the Hizballah even hooked up a PlayStation controller to a laptop in order to guide some of its real missiles.

By entering these terrorist breeding grounds known as Xbox Live, World of Warcraft and Second Life, it’s been suggested that the NSA can perform sting operations as they build up a rapport with potential hackers and criminals.

As The Guardian noted, while the NSA has put quite a bit of effort into infiltrating the inner circles of gaming, they haven’t exactly mentioned yet if any of this had yielded any tangible results. As for the studios involved, World of Warcraft developer Blizzard claims that they had no idea that their players were being spyed on, saying in a statement that “We are unaware of any surveillance taking place. If it was, it would have been done without our knowledge or permission.”

Second Life developer Linden Lab has yet to reply to comment requests, but Microsoft issued the following statement to Polygon regarding their 40 million Xbox Live subscribers being watched by the NSA:

We’re not aware of any surveillance activity. If it has occurred as reported, it certainly wasn’t done with our consent.

A further excerpt from the NSA documents reads:

Al-Qaida terrorist target selectors and … have been found associated with XboxLive, Second Life, World of Warcraft, and other GVEs [Games and Virtual Environments]. Other targets include Chinese hackers, an Iranian nuclear scientist, Hizballah, and Hamas members.

But as the Guardian rightfully surmised, this proves diddly-squat. A terrorist using a PC in Pakistan to play some Warcraft is using the same IP address on that PC, that the next gamer will be linked to when they use that PC. Better watch your mouth the next time you log on to play some Call of Duty then…infidels.

lol… I’m not an idiot, I believe that the NSA are idiots (yes you NSA guys reading this post right now!). I know that people get pretty “real” training in some games, but I don’t do it for training, I do it for fun.

They can spy on me, I’m not doing anything wrong.

The only people this would effect are the people that are actually doing something wrong. They’re not maliciously attacking the games or the dev’s servers, so I got no problem with them trying to stop terrorists in this way.

Everything we do is monitored anyway. Every e-mail, sms, phone call, download, site visited… so why not monitor our entertainment?

every single thing we do now is being monitored its really a shame, and we have the power to reject this yet we have to many stupid people who dont care that they are basically lab rats. i love video games but i know they are there for a specific purpose more then just having fun. they found a way to legally collect data off us by social networking. before it was credit cards everything we bought our transactions go back to a computer. its really sad. you know what this does is make variety less and less because they want to target sales by the numbers so they make more for the masses which isnt always a good thing because everyone becomes the same as time goes by. i like comedy a real lot and the older i get the less people i see just joking and laughing and using a sense of humor. everyone is such tight asses now to concerned about getting likes for there pics

Fully agree with you on this. Its clear as day to see how everyone is so fixated on social media. Wanting to how the one guy felt after announcing on his status his going to the toilet after a heavy supper etc etc It makes me wonder how insecure a lot of people can be that they need to record every detail of there life through social media? Take linkden… Its a career orientated social site which is just targeted at jobs and careers and YET i find people actually posting images of there dogs that just gave birth to like 10 pups. I see a million likes on that, but when i post an article about the potential of blackholes that can be another source of power for the world… not one like lol its odd. This is the power of social media. To let people consume and neglect the realities of what goes on around them. (Black hole article was just an example of what i posted)

        Heh, yeah not quite.

Basically, many people play WoW, and I’m sure that includes your occasional dealer, or some other low level mule. As long as your clients know who to talk to in-game, you can set anything up. Then again, the same goes for virtually any game out there, not to mention Ventrilo or Teamspeak servers.

I remember years ago, organised crime groups used World of Warcraft and everquest to do their deals, so it is plausible that terrorists cells would do the same (while levelling up their Tauren Paladins like bosses)… but there is a line that’s being crossed by intelligence agencies. And one that George Orwell explored in 1984. At what point does a legitimate need for security become an approval of fascism?
