The original Borderlands could make it to current-gen

Borderlands

Borderlands: The Handsome Collection already feels like a pretty meaty remaster, if you’re not sick of the latest gaming trend yet. Borderlands 2, its divisive Pre-Sequel and pretty much all of the DLC released on one disc. What’s missing then? Borderlands numero uno of course. The very first game to take players to Pandora is nowhere to be found in that collection. But that doesn’t mean that Gearbox isn’t interested in digging it up and re-releasing it.

Speaking in the latest Major Nelson podcast, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford explained that it all comes down to money. If Borderlands: The Handsome Collection sells decently, then a remaster of Borderlands will be on the cards. Presumably while PC gamers scoff. Scoff to the max.

“The fact that The Handsome Collection has Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel and Borderlands 2 means there’s still that original game that isn’t on next-gen yet,” Pitchford said via Gamespot.

If this is successful, I’m sure the folks at 2K, the people that care about publishing and figure out how to get content in customers’ hands if customers want it, will be noticing that. And I’d love to have those conversations about how to bring Borderlands 1 to next-gen. “If The Handsome Collection is successful enough, there might be a way to justify that, and I really hope that’s the case.

I’d love to have my entire Borderlands collection on next-gen.

The big hurdle here however, is that the original Borderlands was built on a technology that wasn’t used in the sequels. I’m in two minds about seeing the original game re-released. On the one hand, it’s not exactly necessary, as beyond setting up the world of Borderlands, it doesn’t have the same narrative impact or charm of Borderlands 2 and the Pre-Sequel. On the other hand, my unrelenting greed wants all the Borderlands, right now. That, and I may have a twitchy case of the OCD right here.

  1. Hey! I know! Let’s not make games backwards compatible. Then we remaster or straight out port to current gen and make people pay for it! Again!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! YES!!!!!!

This is why I dislike console gaming.

I’ve never played any of the borderlands, so i wouldn’t mind a remaster of this… but i do agree that backwards compatibility would be the RIGHT thing to do

tbh, if you’re on pc, borderlands doesnt really NEED a remaster, the first one might feel a little dated, but thats only a little, its not like you’re playing MGS1 or something

Exactomundo! The dated feel of the original actually makes it so awesome to play…

I skipped the prequel because I knew it would come to PS4. Also bought GTAV and that’s the only remasters I bought and remastering exclusives are for those that jump ship I have to beleive.

At least when I upgrade my GFX card or CPU my old games don’t suddenly stop working. I really think it’s cheap business tacticts to make you buy a game again

I agree. These remasters are getting out of hand, really. This is the first gen where we see so many remasters being released. It’s cheap, lame and the companies are now just taking advantage of the gullible gamers out there.
          Fuck this shit.

I was just going to ask if this happened with the last-gen switch over. Granted I game on PC so I wouldn’t really know, but I don’t remember hearing about it happening so much.

It didn’t. At best, a NEW game would be released on both PS2 and PS3 for example. AT THE SAME TIME.

You said it man. Every single company that’s had a game that remotely resembled a smidgen of success is being “revamped, remastered and redistributed” it’s ludicrous, simply put…and then they use excuses like, if your first console is a PS4…I’m sorry…what you were born, when two hours ago and now you want to play the game? Really, oh, you can’t afford a used PS3? Really? and at half the price of the most emeizing carrant jean consoles? No thanks, I’ll stick to PC gaming thanks… The reality is that if the game isn’t a proper classic title, something that we remember playing as children for example homeworld or the incredible Doom series, then it must be(because any other form of reasoning behind it just poof, blows out of my mind) a desperate claw at everyone gamings’ last bit of cash…

I can’t stand that man. If he told me the sun was shining I’d not only go check, I’d wonder what his angle is to make money by telling me.

WHY!? I get that BL2 gets to current gen because that game still gets huge love, and is still being played to death (AND 2K kinda screwed up with TPS and have only started saving it with latest DLC)… but why remaster BL1 with TPS graphics?

“The big hurdle here however, is that the original Borderlands was built on a technology that wasn’t used in the sequels.” Umm. Darryn, No they weren’t all three are built on the same engine. It’ll be easy to port, because they have access to the source code of the PC version, and with the new consoles running x86 architecture, “remasters” are re-releases are easier than ever…

a borderlands 1 remaster DEFINITELY needs to replace all the text dialog with proper audio.

I’m starting to really hate this current trend of remastering last gen titles. It’s the epitome of greedy and lazy opportunism.
