Sony may have caused the internet to explode yesterday, with Shenmue, Final Fantasy VII and The Last Guardian showing up. But there’s something else they announced that’s coming to the PlayStation 4 – and it’s something you’ll be able to use today. The PS4 finally has a media player.

PlayStation fans have moaned about the lack of media playback capabilities in the PlayStation 4 since the console was released – especially as many had bought them to replace their media king PlayStation 3’s. Finally, the PlayStation 4 has caught up with a robust media player that plays all manner of media from external USB sources, and networked, DLNA ones. REJOICE!

Says Sony:

“Media Player for the PS4 will be available to download from PlayStation Store this evening. A Media Player icon will appear in the PS4 content area, simply select the icon and you will be taken to the PS Store where you can begin the download”

It supports a wide array of file formats, and should play just about anything you throw at it. Here’s a look at the supported files:

File Formats and Codecs

MKV

  • Visual: H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile Level4.2
  • Audio: MP3, AAC LC, AC-3(Dolby Digital)

Sony bags another E3 victory. I honestly thought that Microsoft beat them with that BC announcement, but then good ol’ Sony just shrugged off that haymaker to the chin, and delivered the curb stomb to a defenceless Microsoft.

Brutal! Just brutal! But oh so gooooodd!

Thought Ms killed it over Sony. Ms had a front of exclusives coming this year, and mentioned but didn’t show exclusives for next year. Sony showed multiplat and stuff for next year.

Nice – been waiting for this! But the XBox backward compatibility now throws a spanner in the works!
