The PlayStation 4 is still outselling the Xbox One

Yesterday, we gave you the grand news that the Xbox One’s retail sales performance has doubled since Microsoft made the rather wise decision to excise Kinect and sell the thing as a separate, optional accessory. That’s magnificent news for Microsoft and Xbox fans…pity the PlayStation 4 is still outselling the thing.

According to the latest ion NPD data, Sony’s PlayStation 4’s sales are still eclipsing the Xbox One’s in North America – despite the huge push. The US is the Xbox brand’s home base, and its biggest market – and the fact that even at its lower price it struggles to compete with the PS4 is telling. That makes it six months in a row that the PS4 is the top selling home console.

Europe and Asia have traditionally been PlayStation-dominated territories, so it’s starting to look like the PlayStation will continue to be the new generation console of choice for a while yet.

the new hardware is actually doing rather well -  jumping 106% year-on-year to $292.7 million. Software sales have dipped a little, a 3% year-on-year decrease to $286.8 million – but that’s hardly surprising with the current AAA gaming drought.

In all, the total industry spend has risen 24% year-on-year to $736.4 million – which is good news for all of us.

“The 106% increase in hardware sales (vs. June 2013) was lifted entirely by console hardware sales, which were up by over 200 percent. The strong sales performance of console hardware helped to offset the declines seen in portable hardware,” NPD analyst Liam Callahan said.

“Combined sales of Xbox One and PS4 are over 80% higher than the combined totals for Xbox 360 and PS3 – an indication of the strength of the start of this new console generation.”

New game releases have sold 67% fewer than new games did last year – though it’s not all that surprising really. The newer consoles don;’t have nearly the same install bases that the old ones, towards the end of their cycles, did. Game sales as a whole are strong though – up 47% in the last quarter.

Here are June’s top selling games.

  1. Watch Dogs (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  2. Mario Kart 8 (Wii U)
  3. Minecraft (PS3, Xbox 360)
  4. EA Sports UFC (PS4, Xbox One)
  5. FIFA 14 (PS3, PS4, Vita, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  6. NBA 2K14 (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  7. Wolfenstein: The New Order (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  8. Call of Duty: Ghosts (PC, PS3, PS4, Wii U, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
  9. Tomodachi Life (3DS)
  10. Grand Theft Auto 5 (PS3, Xbox 360)

Story seems good, but I’m not really into the whole puzzle thing currently. I finished most of it, but you have to unlock ALL the puzzle pieces to unlock the final level.

Let’s be honest. Most of those games still feel like actual games and are 10 to 1 one more fun than some of the crap that comes out on PC and Console.

            They’re still real games

I do feel like Sony captured the essence of the PS2 with this PS4.

There was a time when PS2 dominated the console world. So if the Americans are not buying the Xbox One that means that Sony is taking over this gen.
Xbox 360 and PS3 was more like a stalemate. We knew that Xbox 360 was good for the start and PS3 good for the end game. But this gen I feel Sony is going to Roadrunner the shit out of the Xbox One. Cause as it stands, there will never be a console reason to get a Xbox One.

Well it all depends on how much the Yanks really love their Halo,Forza and Gears of War. Problem is, these exclusives didn’t release with the XBOX One while Killzone and Infamous did with Sony. Both games showed what the PS4 can do. Throw in The Last of Us at a cheaper price on the PS4 than it was on the PS3 (because remake) and it’s hard to see XBOX gaining any ground this year

Halo might be a console seller but I don’t think it will be a great console seller because Bungie is not here.
Gears of War doesn’t have Epic so not a big console seller.
Forza won’t be a console seller.

As this list shows, it’s the sport games that sells and the sport games are on both consoles, so sport fans will pick up the best console for those games.

Sony just needs to bring games. The way I see it, 2016, PS4 is going to sell even better.

If you look at the Xbox 360 and PS3 sale numbers they lay around 85 million. So expect Xbox One numbers to be lower than that and the PS4 to be higher. 120 million, 8 years, maybe.

But they said this gen will last 5 years.

The console market hasn’t shrunk. It’s only getting bigger.

Most consoles has like a 5 year life span before new consoles hits. The 8 year Xbox 360 and PS3 generation was about money. Sony invested too much into the PS3 and was taking a heavy hit per console from the get go. Took them longer than expected to reach profit per console. Microsoft took a early $1 billion hit because of RROD.

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 console was designed for a 4 year life span, I think and PS3 was designed for a 6 year life span, I think.

PS4 and Xbox One is already making profits. Consoles has to make money in a short period of time because it also needs to keep up with technology.
That 8 year bullshit was only a bad thing for gaming. The new consoles now are only where the PC gaming scene was 4 years ago. So in another 5 years time that gap is only going to get much bigger.
I was hoping for better hardware in this gen of consoles but I guess they just focusing on profits this gen. So I’m hoping they will be invest heavily into tech, come next gen consoles.

I don’t think so – according to most this gen isn’t expected to last as long as the old gen. And just too many gaming platforms around nowadays and the Master Race grows i.e. those that perhaps bought PS2’s have grown up and moved to other toys.

It will do well, but not that well. Heck even 85m/90m is going to be pushing it.

PS2 was such a great console though.

Don’t forget that the PS2 was still selling well long after the PS3 was released. So expect the PS4 to still be selling well in some markets long after the release of the PS5.

The PS3 idk that thing with it’s 2 jobs just needs to die. But the way the PS4 is going to perform this gen, Sony could still keep it around for some time after new consoles hit. This PS4 is like unstoppable atm and gamers sure do love it. So it can last in the market for some time. That’s why it could be the next PS2. But we will see what happens.

I think Sony is going to be proud of the success of the PS4. So they might keep it around for some time. The PS3 was just an uphill battle from the start. I’m sure Sony just wants to be done with that.

It’s going to take a while for Xbox to gain the ground they lost at the beginning. It’s a complete disaster for Microsoft. I’m sure it will gain more ground in the coming months but who knows. Perhaps the damage is too great and the only ones who are buying are the die-hard fans?

I dunno. Let’s hope it can pick up a bit. There needs to be competition in the industry. It’s not healthy for one to completely dominate the other
