On the 1st of September last year Nick posted up an articled entitled Is the PS3 really catching up to the Xbox 360? where he looked at the sales gap between the Xbox 360 and PS3 and then working out how long it would take for the PS3 to overtake the Xbox 360.
At the time it was worked out that it would take at least 25 months for the PS3 to overtake the 360.
It’s now 7 months later and instead of the PS3 continuing its charge it has actually turned heal and is scampering off over the horizon.
In September last year the PS3 was 4.5 million units behind the Xbox 360 however now the 360’s lead has grown to a whopping 8.17 million or just under a 90% increase over 6 months.
According to the latest VGChartz sales figures the 360 is outselling the PS3 by an average of 40 000 per week with a sudden jump in sales surrounding every major AAA release.
I have to say that I don’t see a PS3 price drop changing anything anytime soon and Sony really are facing an uphill battle now, how big does this lead need to get to before we can all agree that the PS3 isn’t going to stop the rot?
To rub more salt in the wounds it has also been posted that Halo Wars is now outselling the PS3’s killer title, Killzone 2.

An affordable PS3 will be a tempting proposition for consumers. IMO the price drop will do wonders. That’s IF Sony can afford to since they need to make some money.

the xbox only has the lead in the states (other’s only a marginal lead the xbox).
so the battle is only being lost in the states. fair enough it is the largest market, but american’s have never really been known for their good taste 😆

I paid R 4000 for my PS3 40gb – on special at Makro last year including 2x sixaxis controllers, and I think it was damn good value. If I knew then what I know now, I’d happily pay 5k for it.

Erm, have a look at the “Others” sales figures and you’ll notice that the 360 is over 1.5 million consoles ahead there too…That’s no small number.

xbox 360 had a one yea head start plus they have had more price drops thats why!
does sony really need to beat xbox though?
if you’re not first whats the point. Sony must make a profit.
Xbox can afford to pay 50 million for dlc sponsor a failed hd dvd drive pay 1billion for rrod plus an additional sum of money for E74 and poor disc drives, Microsoft can afford to moneyhat developers and spend much more on marketing their products. If Microsoft didnt have so much money, they’d be out of business. Winning is not always winning. Microsoft are ahead but at what cost?
