The PSN might only be up at month’s end

Sony’s Playstation Network was supposed to be back up and running last week. The error messages I’m receiving when trying to connect tell me that it’s not.

After two and a half weeks of thumb-twiddling, you might be wondering when the blasted service is set to return. Brace yourself.

Sony is still uncertain when the service will resume, but it mightn’t be for a long time.

"When we held the press conference in Japan last week, based on what we knew, we expected to have the services online within a week," said Sony spokesperson Nick Caplin."We were unaware of the extent of the attack on Sony Online Entertainment servers, and we are taking this opportunity to conduct further testing of the incredibly complex system.”

Speaking to Bloomberg, the company’s clarified that testing might only be complete and the service restored on May 31. That would make it nearly 6 weeks of downtime, something Sony hopes to make up for with their offer of two free downloadable games (from a choice of five pre-selected titles) for PS3 users. "Also, look out for more information on the rest of our Welcome Back programme, including which free content you will be eligible for. We will be offering PSN users the opportunity to select two PS3 games from a list of five, as well as offering PSP users the opportunity to choose two games from a list of four. We will let you know exactly what games are available very soon,” the company said on its blog.

I’m glad they’re planning on fixing their security issues, but this is already ridiculous, and extending the downtime through May borders on the ludicrous. The list of free games had better be special, and not like that Undertow nonsense we got from Microsoft when their online service went down for 5 days at the end of 2007.

At least the downtime’s giving PS3 gamers a chance to catch up on their single player backlog, right? Right?
