Just what is the Wii U? A new attempt by Nintendo to bridge the gap between casual and core gamers? A method to watch stealthy fap material thanks to that fancy tablet controller? THE END OF ALL GAMING AS WE KNOW IT? If that last one sounds a tad doomsayery, that’s because it’s the vibe that I picked up from the creator of Pong and co-founder of Atari, Nolan Bushnell, who doesn’t sound too keen on the console.

In a feature from the New York Times, Bushnell expressed confusion and bafflement about the device, explaining that he thought that it would be a flop. “I actually am baffled by it. I don’t think it’s going to be a big success,” he said.

Bushnell also believes that because the Wii U is maybe lacking any real powerhouse hardware under the hood, it’ll be less attractive to gamers in the long run. Y’know, even though waggly controls made the Wii console a heavyweight champ despite it having the visual power of a tuned Gamecube;

These things will continue to sputter along, but I really don’t think they’ll be of major import ever again. It feels like the end of an era to me.

Will the Wii U signal the end times of gaming and plunge us all into a hundred years of darkness where the only gaming to be had consists of board games and, gah, human interaction? Highly doubtful.

The console launched this past festive season in the states, and so far, it’s doing pretty well. It may be lacking a solid marketing strategy, but that doesn’t seem to be deterring people from enjoying a few games of Super Mario Bros U or ZombieU on it.
