The Witcher 3 leaked to Torrents, but CD Project Red is being nice about it

Witcher3_8

The Witcher 3. It’s a game that people want – and have wanted for nigh on 3 years. So many people want the game that it’s managed to snag a million pre-orders before its release next week. It’s also being released in a DRM-free version on CD Projekt’s own Good old Games. And of course, the DRM-free pre-load has already been leaked all over the internet.

Yes, the Witcher 3 is available for pirates to download already. They can’t play it yet, because it needs the file necessary for the one-time-activation – but once release date hits, pirates will be able to play the game, along with paying customers. And because they’re an oddly generous  and forgiving sort, CD Projekt Red is making the day one, performance-boosting, bug-fixing patch available to all and sundry – even the people who’ve stolen their game.

Speaking on a popular Torrent site (via Misstral), an apparent CDPR employee urged pirates to support the developer instead of stealing its game – adding that those who do choose to keep on pirating won’t have a degraded experience. It seems awfully nice of them.

Witcher-3-635x471

The Witcher 3 is coming next week. Remember, we’re giving away a collector’s edition of the game for the PlayStation 4. Check here for details.

It is double the size of Skyrim and way bigger Witcher 3 has set the bar which is why Bethesda congratulated them. Fallout 4 and the following Elder Scrolls after Skyrim will take a lot from Witcher 3 because it is that good :D. It is the biggest solo game to date being just bigger than GTA V to.

The biggest thing Bethesda needs to take from Witcher 3 isn’t the world size, it’s the effort put into every quest. Any quest you pick up from a billboard will take time and effort, and isn’t just some throwaway like a lot of quests in Skyrim ended up being.

I’ve played the Elder Scrolls since Daggerfall.

Playing “Witcher 3” was like graduating from grade-school and going straight to university.

The game isn’t even released yet and it has hit torrent sites? That’s what the devs get for doing pre-loading without DRM.

*shrug* It’s their own fault, it’s self inflicted, I don’t think I can feel any sympathy for CDPR.

I’ve been thinking that since they announced the “NO DRM” thing.

Yes they’ll sell millions of copies, but there’ll be many more pirated copies out there.

Hell even BigAnt added DRM to Don Bradman 14 AFTER release because the game was pirated so much.

This is why we have DLC , and DRM , it’s the only way to make pirates life a pain, and sadly the paying customers also gets stuck with the crap.

But normally it’s the paying customers that gets shafted when servers go down day one. I’d rather play on console with the reassurance that the game will run even if the servers are down.

Not really. The DRM gets cracked and DLC end up on the torrent sites as well. So neither of those two actually do anything but screw the paying customers unfortunately.

          May 22, 2015 at 04:49

Ya DRM, force the paying people to deal with bullshit so the pirates have to wait a few days for a crack vs get it day 1 why didn’t anyone else think of that.

I’ve pirated over 400 games and paid for only around 15-20. Now guess which games are the games I bought… Exactly, ALL Witcher titles + Exp pass for W3. And the reason for this is plain and simple:
        * NO DRM
        * Excellent content
        * Developers which understand WHY people pirate and not spend resources on preventing piracy, instead of spending them on content.

I’m even thinking of buying the Witcher series twice :-). My deepest respects to those guys…

It would be interesting to see what kind of weight their goodwill and generosity will have on the industry and its consumers. If this kind of benevolence can pay off for them in the form of blind zealotry I have a feeling it will pay off in a very, very big way. Even bigger than their current idolized status, I think.

Unfortunately, as much as I hope that this does work for them, Pirates tend to love goodwill and generosity. They take it full heartedly while probably doing something that resembles that FFX laugh, giving nothing back. Take take take.

actualy, i’ve just contacted their support: the request if i could somehow transfer my current safefile (a torrented one) to a official one if i bought it.

i woulnt even have been close to daring to ask a company this, but red…. red is something special, i have never seen a company so sympathizing with players, and i think they deffinetly deserve a reward for that: not only for being so kind, but also as a signal to other companies (im looking at you EA and Ubisoft) to act like this.

pretty amazing to see a company working like this.

Didn’t one of the employees do this with Witcher 2 as well? It’s never really been a secret that CDPR isn’t anal about piracy. They tend to believe in their product and hope that it would be enough to convince people to buy their products.

All in all, this isn’t really news to me. But it’s still nice to see how amazing some developers can be compared to others.

witcher is great game, i want present MOBA style game – THE WITCHER: BATTLE ARENA, its free game and you can play it on your android, apple or windows phone. You can play with characters, from the Witcher series such as the kingslayer Letho, the dwarven brawler Zoltan Chivay, the mysterious Operator or the powerful sorceress Philippa Eilhart.

Yes, because they don’t screw over their paying customers in a futile attempt to stick it to pirates who will circumvent ANYTHING you do. Paying customers more important than pirates? Imagine that!

I’m also guessing they’re hoping that many of those people playing their “demo” will actually buy the game, kind of like an honour system. Let’s see how many pirates have that sense of honour.

Yes. The Galaxy client is of GOG isn’t DRM though. It can be used 100% offline just as a library for your games. But you can purchase games with it if you do go online, through GOG. It’s still in early development, but I like it.

I fail to see how that is different from Steam. It’s an offline library for all of my games and I can even play some multiplayer games (with limited functionality of course).

            May 15, 2015 at 14:34

It’s not very different. And it definitely won’t make me use it instead of Steam. But it’ll be nice to have a place to put all my GOG games.

Piracy will never die, but high quality products like this should be supported. I pirated Mass Effect 1 and while playing it I was enjoying it and knew that I needed to support this game. I ended up buying all 3 of them. I use piracy in gaming to test a game out. Almost like a Demo. Games like Mass Effect, The Witcher etc are games that deserve every cent put into it. I know most wont agree with Mass Effect 3 deserving cash after its annoying ending but i still enjoyed it a lot regardless of the ending.

I’ve never pirated before and have bought hundreds of games over the years but the other day I thought I’d see how easy it was and downloaded a couple of new games. I gotta say it was too damn easy but you know what, I literally couldn’t bring myself to play them as much I wanted too! I don’t usually pay full price for games so it will be at least six months before I will buy them. Even still I would rather wait and do it legitimately rather than have it right now and be a first stinking free loader.

The fact is that no matter what type of DRM companies use, pirates will
get their DRM free games while paying customers will be punished with
restrictions pirates won’t even see. So I applaud this approach and hope
that CDPR will have great success and many sold copies of Witcher 3.

I have to hand it to CDPR / GOG. They understand there are things that are unavoidable, and yet still treat their playing communities and consumers like actual people.
Uplay, Origin, XBLive (see leaked Gears of War story), and Steam (though much less intrusive) a means to control and dictate what and how consumers use the product.
CDPR / GOG understands and treats people a certain level of trust and integrity, in other words *VALUES* their customer base and listens.
There was a time that most software companies did this….. Thank you CDPR / GOG, it is appreciated.

such nice guys, i think the man appreciates that pirates are going to miss out of dlc, and this game is a big one, people who sometimes get pirated games do buy because to them its like a demo. you get to try be4 you buy, and sometimes you get to play be4 release so the temptation is great. but i know alot of guys who always buy for multiplayer, its a shame other companies cant take this kind of approach, people appreciate the work it takes to build games like this. but not everyone will ever buy it cause not everyone has a spare £40. some companies think if they stop piracy they will just make more money and that is a false belief and a greedy one. ive already ordered 😛

This is a good approach and i think all game company should do this .. why? .. gone are the days you get to play a demo of the game … probably one of the reasons alot of people torrent these days . Ill admit i use torrent , but only to try the game for the first hour and make sure it runs nicely on my pc , if it does and i enjoy the game i will buy the game and support the company. It would be alot easier for company’s to release a 30 mins – 1 hour capped demo of a game.
