The Witcher 3 sells 4 million copies in two weeks

Witcher3

The Witcher 3 is – despite some terrible bugs – a pretty damned good game. I’ve been rather busy with work stuff, so I’ve only just started the game, and it’s making me rather happy. It would make me happier if it included (as every game should) some Chinese people, of course, but we can’t all get what we want. The game had sold a million and a half copies before it was even released, garnering that many pre-orders based on hype. It’s now gone to sell two and a half million more copies – which isn’t bad for just two weeks. CDPR has let everybody know of the milestone by way of press release.

“Dear Gamers,” says CDPR boss Marcin Iwinski

“May 19th was a crucial date for all of us here at CD PROJEKT RED — we released The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, our open world role-playing game that we had been hard at work on for over 3 years. Since day one, you have given us tons of positive feedback and support — the sheer volume of emails we’ve gotten since launch simply congratulating us for our efforts is both epic and heartwarming, and I wish every developer comes to have such a fantastic community. In terms of media reception, we’re really humbled by the scores the game has received all around the world. With an average of 90+ on every platform, Wild Hunt is our dream coming true.

I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank the four million gamers worldwide who bought The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in the first two weeks from launch. Four million RPG fans spending their hard-earned money on our game is a sign that we did something right, and you can be sure that we’ll harness all that positive energy and make the upcoming expansions worthy of the grand adventure that you’re telling us Wild Hunt already is! Until then, keep on enjoying Wild Hunt, do not forget to grab your weekly set of free DLCs, and stay tuned for constant updates and enhancement to the game we are continuously working on.”

That’s a heck of a lot of people playing a single player RPG. Take that, big publishers who insist on back-of-the-box multiplayer checklists!

Then suddenly 1 main quest, 5 side quests, 7 hunting quests and a few questions marks appear on the map.

You know, before The Witcher there were hundreds of amazing books to read. Literally, hundreds (maybe even thousands, but let’s be conservative here). All of them more imaginative, more intense, and less tedious than The Witcher.

          • Greylingad[CNFRMD]

            June 9, 2015 at 15:24

You raise a good point, but you’ve played Borderlands 2 before, right?

            June 9, 2015 at 15:26

I have, obviously. But that’s not a 300 hour slog. 300 hours in that includes multiple play-throughs, all DLC story content, multiple characters, and some gear farming.

          • Greylingad[CNFRMD]

            June 9, 2015 at 15:38

Ok, just hold on a minute, I’m not trying to convince you that the Witcher is better than any other game, I doubt though that it would ever take me 300 hours to play the game, unless I leave my PC unmanned for a few days, but coming from BL or a similar game, I spent waaaayyyy too much time in BL, played with the gunzerker, the assassin and my favourite, Krieg the psycho, all three of those playthroughs I’ve managed to hit the top level cap on the maximum level cap, not because I was grinding, but because I loved the game. Now a lot of people will tell you that the Witcher is a game that would take you four years to play through, yes, if you manage to walk everywhere in reverse maybe, but I don’t imagine anyone would go through that torment… What does make it good though is their approach to side quests, which is something you’ve probably heard a million times over already, but it’s up to you how you play a game, if you like it, the natural tendency would be to spend time in it/with it, but you’ll get to a point where you’ve had enough and you’ll move forward…

My first introduction to the series was the first game, needless to say, I try to convince myself that I really tried hard, but after about two hours of struggling with the fighting and the camera angle I gave it up for a lost cause, I only recently played the second one and now I’m busy with the third. Like I say, the side quests feel more “complete” in a sense that it seems as if they’ve put the same effort into producing it as they would have the main quests, I’m sure you’ve heard that in abundance too, but it’s really true they’ve managed to change the fetch quests into something more… But try it, it’s definitely not for everyone, but even so it’s very good….

I’m sure it is. But I still have no desire to buy the game. Even on special. I’ve said this many times before, I’m one of the few who love RPG’s who has no interest in TW3.

cant compare a new game to a 4 year old game. Currently I can however say with confidence that The Witcher 3 is the best RPG created to date. Even compared to the greats like Baldurs Gate, Daggerfall, Betrayal at Krondor, Crono Trigger, Ultima etc …

There aren’t many who disagree. I’ve looked all over for these people, but the worst criticism from someone who’s actually played it, came from someone who still gives it 8/5/10.

Great, well done to them. A good product, I must say.

I still wonder when the backlash will start, when articles listing the faults and so forth start. You know, the trying to bring the game down a peg or two. Like Skyrim., (broken record, me)

BUT, I do love the game. In my limited time, I am playing it on normal difficulty, which is telling. A game this big, I typically play on easy to just get story stuff and for fun.

Is the game too big? I find the map area of Velen / Novgarad massive and tricky to walk about in. Walk, level 25 monster takes my head off, one hit. Oops. Right. not there then.

true, true. But it got frustrating when I went chasing question marks when I first arrived in the area. I had to first do some more main story missions.

But, as a general principal, I do not like games that scale monsters to your level. I prefer this

games way too big, so was dragon age inquistion.
you feel the need to explore, then 20 hours later and you’re 5 levels higher than all your quests and you just brute force your way through all the quests.

but really, im ok with that.
just wish all the people, towns and baddies you meet had a bit more individuality or that the general witcher contracts / side quest were a bit more interesting.

That’s what happened with me in Skyrim. I think I killed Alduin with 5 hits. Or something ridiculous like that. What makes this game great is that it doesn’t feel like I need to grind in order to gain levels. The contracts are freaking amazing and the sidequests are better than most AAA games. I also like how they seem to have little twists to them.

modern RPGs are way too level dependant.
can we not just get baddies that scale to our level? is that really so hard?
even borderlands gets the scaling level system right, how can 2014/15s most highly anticipated RPGs not?

they need splitting up, there are some interesting side quests, like the phillipa, radovid or high stakes gwent side quests, but you get far more trash boring ones from guys on the side of the road giving out stuff that isnt quite side quest worthy or even witcher contract worthy.

Hahah!! Well, it’s quite interesting, you know where they originated, having to bootleg copies of games, simply because they were unavailable at the time, they then started to make a name for themselves, nothing big, they quite literally were selling copies out of a guys’ apartment, but they realised that pirates were copying games at around $3 a cd, so they wanted to change it and started looking at alternatives, so they decided to distribute Baldurs Gate 2 by acquiring the licensing for it and doing the translations themselves, they then started selling it at $15 where it was 5 cds big, but they did it with extra content….

I cannot stop running toward the question marks on the map, it’s like an unavoidable attraction, oh let’s see what this is BLEARGH, load screen, that was a bad idea, let’s run around it and BLEARGH, load screen, okay…the other way then…

55 hours in and I swear 20 of those were probably spent on Gwent! I am starting to think I will never finish this amazingly wonderful game! Loving it!
