The Xbox 360 still has some life left

According to Microsoft’s Phil spencer the aging Xbox 360, launched in 2005, has more than two years of gaming life left to give – but that’s no reason to believe we wont see a next-gen successor next year.

“Right now the Xbox 360 is really healthy and it’s doing incredibly well,” Spencer told GameSpot. “I think the 360 has a lot more than two years [left]. It has legs for a long time.

“Microsoft entered this space with the original Xbox 11 years ago, and we’re committed for the long-term,” he added. “The nice thing about the Xbox 360 right now is we’re the number one console globally. We’re able to bring in new content and still support the best of the core games.”

“It’s a platform that has really reached scale; this is the time when you really see the great content showing up.”

Though it hasn’t quite reached the penetration of Sony’s ubiquitous PlayStation 2 – which still sells fairly well – it’s probably the closes thing we have this generation to that console; it’s cheap, and has an extensive library of worthwhile games.

It’s incredibly likely, as we saw with the PS2 – that there’ll be a generational overlap, and that Microsoft will continue to support the Xbox 360 (albeit in a diminished fashion) for a number of years after the launch of its next generation console, expected to be unveiled next year.

My wallet’s a little unwilling, but after seeing those “next-gen” engines from Epic and Square, I think my body is ready.
