The Xbox One finally breaks the PS4 sales streak

MY-GAWHD-KING

Right now, Microsoft and Sony are swimming in a pool of money thanks to robust console sales. In the case of Sony however, that pool of ash is bigger, deeper and has gold-plated diving boards with platinum accents, as the PlayStation 4 has consistently beaten the Xbox One in sales for almost a solid year now. Well, Microsoft might just be ready to get a bigger pool, as the Xbox One has overtaken the PS4 for the first time.

In the US at least, which is home territory for the Xbox One. According to NPD results, Microsoft broke Sony’s ten-month streak in much the same way that Brock Lesnar broke the Undertaker’s streak at Wrestlemania this year. It’s not too surprising to see the Xbox One surge ahead in November.

Thanks to Black Friday, a $50 price cut and various other discounts, the Xbox One surged ahead of the competition.  “November set a new record for sales of Xbox One, and Xbox One was the best-selling console in the US and UK,” Xbox marketing corporate VP Mike Nichols said via VG247.

Response to the holiday lineup of games on Xbox One was incredible, with Xbox One fans buying more games in November in the US than any other gen eight platform and enjoying over 357 million hours of gameplay globally. In fact, more fans logged into Xbox Live across Xbox One and Xbox 360, and enjoyed more entertainment, than any other month in the history of Xbox. We love to see the excitement from our fans and are grateful for their passion, support and contributions to the Xbox community.

As for Nintendo, sales were also looking good for the first current-of-this-generation console. Nintendo reported a year-on-year growth spik of over 40% in the 3DS sales department, thanks primarily to Pokemon selling over 1.5 million units in the US of A since the November 21 launch. Combined with Super Smash Bros 3DS, the future is looking good for that handheld.

Thanks to Super Smash Bros, the Wii U console has also enjoyed a 90% year-on-year jump upwards, with a 10% increase in hardware sales which gave the Wii U its best sales week ever, since it launched in 2012. According to Nintendo, Super Smash Bros has sold nearly 710 00 units through both digital and physical means, with Amiibo sales “approximately equal to sales of Super Smash Bros. Wii U”.  Naturally, Pikachu, Mario and Link have been top-sellers.

Even though overall industry spending was down 11%, it’s still a rosy picture for sales. Digital sales aren’t factored into the charts, a side of purchasing that is increasing in influence lately. Factor in the various discounts, and yes, less dollars were spent on more hardware. While software sales were actually down 2%, new releases have actually sold 14% better than they did a year ago.

“For the most part throughout 2014, we have seen software declines that were offset by year-over-year increases in hardware spending. This November, however, hardware declines totalled $294 million while software declined $17 million or 2%,” The NPD Group’s Liam Callahan said.

As for actual game sales, these were the November top ten, from top to bottom:

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare – Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS4, PS3, PC

Grand Theft Auto 5 – PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3

Super Smash Bros. – Wii U, 3DS

Madden NFL 15 – Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS4, PS3

Pokemon Alpha Sapphire – 3DS

Far Cry 4 – PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3, PC

Pokemon Omega Ruby – 3DS

NBA 2K15 – PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PC

Assassin’s Creed: Unity – PS4, Xbox One, PC

Halo: The Master Chief Collection – Xbox One

So, what you’re saying is, if you GIVE the console away for almost nothing people will buy it? Okay. That makes sense.

Your logic has a couple of flaws.
The Xbox One also outsold everything else in the UK to and the Xbox One AND the PS4 are both at Exactly the same price and both come with the same amount of games. £329.
When you say they “dropped” Kinect you really mean they released a model without Kinect, the Kinect model still sells for £385 only £35 less than day one and Kinect can be bought separate for £120.

By more 180s it has left the Xbox with next to No DRM whilst the PS4 is full of it, i.e hardly any media allowed no portable USB devices which you can put your games on and then play them on any other
Console you can sign into etc

So as far as the UK goes the Xbox One simply outsold the PS4.

      2. If you say “that is all it took” then MS simply has to continue as they are now and they are laughing.

Listen its like comparing Toyota to Ferrari, Toyota will outsell Ferrari its way way cheaper, you get what you pay for, if Ferrari would drop their prices to that of the Toyota, Toyota would be out of business, you pay for what you get, reacher settler situation, btw Toyota being Xbone and Ferrari being PS4

Exactly, no need if you come in at a loss already! MS came in too expensive with the Kinect bundled. They paid a hefty price for it in sales but luckily they had the good sense to rectify the problem, and as can be seen it’s paying off. If it weren’t for Nintendo and MS what do you think you’d pay for a PeaShooter4? Also don’t forget MS can actually afford to do it, Sony…not so much!
