Here in South Africa, watching Twitch streams is a bit of a gamble. You can either get something slightly worse than a low resolution YouTube video, or you get something that looks like Minecraft in slow motion. Still, with both of the new consoles so heavily invested in this video sharing and streaming stuff, it’s worth seeing which does the streaming better. Right now, it looks like this is one area where the Xbox One has better resolution.
While the Xbox One Twitch streaming functionality hasn’t gone live to the public yet, Xbox evangelist Larry “Major Nelson” Hyrb has been testing the feature, teasing his followers with his streaming escapades.
Running the Major’s stream through a Twitch analyzer, we see that the Xbox One twitch stream runs at a solid 30fps, at 720p – with 0 dropped frames. Hooray!
Stream Info
- Resolution: 1280×720
- Frame Rate: 30 FPS
- Audio: aac, 44100 Hz, stereo, s16, 147 kb/s
For comparison’s sake, the PS4 Twitch app at default settings streams at 960×540, also at 30 fps – though it’s interesting that none of the PS4 streams will work through the analyser anymore. Hmmm.
If watching other people play games instead of playing games yourself is your idea of a good time, then it’s pretty clear which console is the one for you. I can honestly say that my Twitch watching experience from our usually sunny clime has been less than favourable, so for the most part, it’s something I’ve ignored.
PS4 owners, tell us: do you sit and watch people’s Twitch streams? Xbox One owners; is this something you plan to do?
Twitch streaming goes live on the Xbox One on March 11

Never really done the whole twitch thing. I’ve always watched LP’s though and really love it.

Still don’t know why I would want to watch someone else play. Except Dark Souls. Even then it’s Youtube

I don’t like people watching me. I feel bad for them once they realise they just can’t compete with my insane levels of awesome.

In all fairness, a 720 P video would stream better than a 1080 P video 😛 (and yes I did read the article)

Most streams I watch of local BF4 matches have people complaining of lag if the stream is higher than 480p resolution. Some of the shoutcasters have invested in 20 and 40meg VDSL to stream 720p but the viewers can’t download the stream smoothly so whats the point? I have heard that we need local Twitch partners for this to work.

Twitch is bigger than we think. Pity the streams are hampered by a first come first serve quality basis.

Twitch will evolve in time. Especially considering these console’s built in ability, the number of potential users jumped several milliom! If the number of active people broadcasting and viewing are any indicator, I’d give it a few more years

Twitch is HUGE! Used by tens of millions worldwide! And why not? I would definitely rather watch some dude play Minecraft than watch Idols!! Been having it on the Xbone and it works like a charm! Xbox One does have a couple of nice features added(joining the streamers party etc). Good stuff!????

Not interested in this at all, and even if i was it wouldn’t be enough to buy a xone.
