Perception

I like the Xbox One console. I really do. But one thing that no one shares any enthusiasm with me for, is the new Kinect. It’s a bundled with the console and is the reason why you’re paying extra for it. But will the public ever come to accept that the Kinect addition is worth the cash? Microsoft’s Albert Penello certainly thinks so.

Speaking to OXM, the planning and marketing director for Microsoft explained that perceptions would change when the console launched, as the new Kinect is meant to to complement the console, not serve as a tacky add-on.

“One of the biggest challenges with Kinect is that the people who are the most vocal against it, often haven’t used it,” Penello said.

You know, we’ve sold 26 million of them against a 76 million unit install base, or something along those lines – but the problem is it’s an accessory right? And whenever you have an accessory, you know, as a guy who’s worked on platforms now for three generations, there’s always a pro and a con to an accessory.

The con is, when developers can’t rely on it, when they don’t know it’s there, they’re never going to take full advantage of it. So, you get these inconsistent gaming experiences, you get inconsistent implementation, game developers had to choose to take CPU power away from the console to support the skeletons. And what we said was, for those of us that use it – like I don’t play Pixar Rush, it’s not my kind of game, but I use Kinect all the time for Xbox pause, Xbox play.

And when you see the features that the new Kinect can do – we just said, you know what, like let’s take that decision of having to make that trade off away and the console will support it, it’s native, it was engineered for it.

Penello also explained that the improved Kinect will help sell the console and games, especially now that the device was reliable. Or more importantly that it worked properly, the way it was meant to. “Everybody can rely on it, now that we’re not burdening developers [with the task of making] trade-offs with games that use it, that means more people are going to experience it.”

I will say that I after having a hands-free-on wiggle session with the device at E3, I was kinda impressed. It’s way, way better than the current Kinect and while there are still one or two moments where the device isn’t too responsive, it’s still a massive improvement.

It’s good that they are making the Kinect an integral part of the One. It does give them an edge in terms of differentiating themselves.it is no longer an accessory but a standard peripheral. That said, if it is really improved, then it will be a great selling point

I am hopeful for the kinect, I’m so glad they didn’t budge on this — It’s the fanboys bitching about the system they have never intended to buy, and trying to cut my experience every which way… Any positive boost, corrections, policy reversal was never meant with praise, they were met with yet more bitching you can’t win with the internet microsoft.

They were the enemy from last gen for having users subscribe although Sony is doing it now, it’s ok -_- …..

Yeah it’s true Sony is doing it. But I primarily sub to PS+ to store my saved games. Then all the games came every month along with the subscription. Latency is so bad in South Africa sometimes that it’s not even worth playing online. So I will continue to support PS+ so that I know my saved games are save when the worst happens and for the sake of getting free games monthly. If Sony removed this I wouldn’t be bothered.

Latency is ISP related. I’ve had no qualms with latency on PSN or Live. Every afternoon I have at least 2 buttery smooth games of FIFA 13 on PSN.

You kind of win people over if you have more features – rather than less. Xbox live hasn’t changed much over the years. Sure, the dashboard changed to accommodate more ads. We ended up paying more every few years, and YES! Xbox live has finally taken a page from Sony’s book with the monthly free games, but seriously… that is an insult. We’re getting MAGIC this month. MAGIC!! I mean what the fuck?

What you really should be asking is, why has Microsoft rested on their laurels with xbox live and the xbone? And it has nothing to do with vocal criticism. The failures and reversals of the Xbone is not because of “fanboys bitching”, but rather a realisation that Microsoft was caught with their pants down. They tried to go down a very consumer-unfriendly path and they were justifiable crucified for it. The fact that they’ve been unable to return from the first set of 180s is merely a reminder of how utterly out of touch they’ve become.

Fortunately, corporations have no feelings, so don’t worry Microsoft actually doesn’t care. They’re probably going to focus on mobiles next gen any way.

You have a valid point about mobile devices. Iron Man 3 and World War Z skipped the PC and consoles because they now that crappy movie games doesn’t sell anymore and it’s to expensive to make.

Instead these game are only available on IOS and Android.

I am sure Microsoft’s 15 year plan to own the American living room is finally coming to an end. But they should have boiled the frog slowly for those who are not American.
It is just economically non viable outside of America.

They only seemed to realise that when Project Red informed them that they cannot even flipping play The Witcher 3 in their country upon release as they were outside of the 21 countries listed for support.

So many other FORCED MANDATORY decisions.

They had to do 180s or the install base would have just been American.

If I was American I would be all over the ONE considering XBOX LIVE DATA states that gamers only game 1 third of the time while on LIVE.

But I am looking for an off line gaming console not Skype. I do not care for 180s. Thats like your political party changing their mandate after they get the vote. Not very trustworthy.

It will be neck and neck again as it all seems to be about identical 3rd party multi plat games these days anyway.

So the cheaper console makes sense.

You want an offline console? You can have it. You can also have the latest exclusives for R720 a pop.

Consoles need to embrace online and learn from services such as Steam and Ganersgate. There are kickstarters happening for PC titles left, right and center. Those are your nostalgic platformers like the recent Mighty No. 9. Such games will be coming to PC first and then consoles.

Sure the PS4 does Indie titles but every one of them will becoming to Steam Greenlight.

            Microsoft Xbox 360

The Xbox 360, currently sitting in a very comfortable second place in
terms of sales, appeals mainly to males aged between 12 and 17, and
females aged between 25 and 34. This seems like a bizarre mix but the
younger age range for boys could explain the level of petty whining and
douchebaggery on display over Xbox Live.

            Sony PS3

The PS3 generally seems to appeal to the older generation, with no
young kids anywhere in the mix. This could just be because the Sony
machine is so damn expensive that kids are still saving up their pocket
money for one. Both males and females saw the largest usage amongst the
18 to 24 age range. This is considered the hardcore range where gamers
play more games and for longer than any other age range.

People would be more enthusiastic for it, if they found more compelling uses for it. Plain and simple. The fact that they’re being forced to buy something that, to date hasn’t satisfied THEM, at $100 extra to the cost of the machine…is a bit silly.

It’s very simple, make the must-have titles that utilize Kinect in a way gamer’s don’t find stupid, obnoxious, silly and/or a mixture of all 3, and they’ll get it themselves.
