The Xbox One needs to get the message out

If there’s one thing that the Xbox One has really failed at, it’s getting a proper message across. Whatever the console has announced, has been met with loud boos and hisses from gamers. From “deal with it” through to a DRM reversal, no one has been happy. Now, Microsoft wants to send a clear message out there to all gamers.

Speaking to IGN, Xbox One chief product officer Marc Whitten admitted that the company needed to get a solid message out into the wild. “What it tells me is we need to do more work to talk about what we’re doing because I think that we did something different than maybe how people are perceiving it,” Whitten said.

When I read some of the things like that petition, from my perspective we took a lot of the feedback and, while Xbox One is built to be digital native, to have this amazing online experience, we realized people wanted some choice.

They wanted what I like to call a bridge, sort of how they think about the world today using more digital stuff. What we did, we added to what the console can do by providing physical and offline modes in the console.

It isn’t about moving away from what that digital vision is for the platform. It’s about adding that choice. Frankly, I think we need to just do more to let people see how the console works, what they’re going to be able to do for it. I think a lot of the things they’re wishing for are frankly there.

Whitten has the right attidue there. Namely, a complete lack of one, unlike Mattrick and his earlier statements. I like the Xbxo One, I honestly do. Hell, I’m planning to buy one next year and hopefully in the next couple of months, that console can get a message out as to why that console deserves my extra Randelas.

Well isn’t that refreshing. Someone from MS who actually thinks before speaking.

I really hope they can pull out of their current nose dive because the system had an opportunity to be big and different but MS keep making the wrong choices. Maybe some new, thoughtful, direction can get them back on track

I hope it is not catching. MS has always made for great IT news.

Years ago some MS guy was talking about Unix integration (1990’s) and was going about various shells. Some guy was heckling him about being wrong. Eventually, someone else introduced the pair to one another: Heckler was David Korn, creator of the Korn shell MS guy was going on about. Classic

Or windows 1995 demo, some bright spark asked MS to show mult-tasking by copying from stiffy and disk at same time. Oops, MS did not really get that perfected until much later.

This is the real problem. It’s being unprepared and believing that the world always wants what you create.

It’s not the way it works. If you create it, people will only use it if there is some freedom in it.

MS tried to force a certain way upon people and what is one of humanities biggest issues? Freedom. Remove freedom from any system and people will stand up and go “No”.

Also, arrogance has a lot to play here as well. They were arrogant to believe that everyone would get or has internet just to use the device.

I hope that they can reign back on some of that arrogance and blind bullheaded marketing and start thinking about their product a bit more. MS has made a great system that is capable of so much yet they keep restraining the tech in the system by not innovating or finding solutions. It’s harming a great product really.

It is also a business, sell, sell, sell.

I think the Xbox 360, the one I have, is a great product. It is well made, parts are strong and so forth.

You remember Highlander TV series? A few small changes and it would have been totally awesome. Fantastic. But they resisted that and it was so so.

Xbox One can be that awesome.

I help develop products sometimes and I believe a certain arrogance is called for. You are taking a chance and you have to pull that off. We are doing demonstration this week and I want to come off as oozing confidence. What is the line between oozing confidence and arrogance? Expectation management is always the biggest issue, and MS failed in that department.

Agreed. If the message was, you don’t have to use these features, but trust us you really would want to if you possibly can! then it would have been much, much better (Emphasis on the “if you can” bit). Choice is king 🙂

As with the WiiU, An amazing system that got lost in translation, Nintendo tried too little to convince us we need a wiiU, MS did tried to hard. Well I am elated that they finally realized that you have to give consumers choice

I don’t think it’s coz they tried too hard. The amount of effort they put in is astonishing really.

They tried to change how gaming consoles are perceived and received. It would have worked too if they had more open choice from the beginning. The problem was that they tried so hard that they ended up making it a requirement to use the features included instead of something that adds value to the product IF you can use it.

True, but, to me, they tried too hard to convince us we need it. They bet everything on the fact that they can convince us we needed all those features. They implemented all those things and tried to force it on us. You can’t deny the effort they put in, but as you say, it would’ve worked if we were given a choice

That’s what I think was the problem – they didn’t actually try to convince people, they just said, “and that’s the bottom line, cos MS said so!”

Xbone, your first impression was one of some sorted of Nazi / Homeland Securtiy based Spy-TV mediator with the ability to also play games. Your pundits told us to #Dealwithit, in response we told your pundits to fuck off.

Now, you do a turn around. Well you’ve got some work to do to get back into the gaming community’s favour.

Despite all the negativity the Xbox one has done very well in pre orders so far and the line up of games are 2nd to none! Will definitely be getting the Xboxwon! ????. I do think the next gen war will be decided in China though! Once they lift the console ban it’s going to be a free for all over there! But which way will the Chinese market lean? They do love and emulate the American lifestyle but the Chinese government will not likely allow the Kinect due to obvious reasons! Not saying the PS is going to have better luck either, quite the contrary, the Chinese has not forgotten WW2 by a loooong shot and their is no love lost towards Japan for sure! I think if MS can maybe make a non Kinect version for China they might just have this next gen in the bag, maybe!? ????

Pretty sure they already got the message out…I’m just not sure that the message was very well received….

This is a bit odd to me though, you had your reveal, you had your E3 presser and you had your DRM 180. And you’re saying that people still don’t know how it works and ‘What they’re going to be able to do for it’ (whatever the hell that means).

It sounds to me like along with Mattrick, you folks should’ve fired your PR department as well. You’ve had 2 chances to show the world what the machine can do….and what we can do for it???? And if the message is still unclear, you’ve got public speaking issues.
