Xbox 360 owners who subscribe to Xbox Live gold have up until recently, been getting pretty lacklustre, old games for free as part of Microsoft’s Games with Gold – but at least they’ve been getting games. Xbox One owners haven’t been quite as lucky, getting the digital equivalent of Darryn’s sex life every month. This month, that changes – and the first two games for Xbox One owners are now live.
If you possess an Xbox One, you can now download two games on the house. Before you get too excited, they’re not exactly exceptional games – though to be fait, neither are the PS4 games available on PlayStation Plus.
Right now, you can download the micro-transaction addled Halo: Spartan Assault and Max: The Curse of Brotherhood for nothing. Halo Spartan Assault is a top-down shooter set between Halo 3 and 4, and features a campaign of over 30 missions that the game, laughably, wants you to pay real-world money to buy weapons for.
Max: The Curse of Brotherhood is an action-adventure, puzzle-filled platformer that has you drawing things with a magical marker in order to traverse hazard-filled levels to save your brother.
As with PlayStation Plus, you can actually add these games to your library without actually owning an Xbox One, so if you subscribe to gold, you may as well grab these while they’re available. Unfortunately. those with South African Xbox Live accounts won’t be able to take advantage here, as they’ll be greeted with a message saying “The Xbox One Games Store is not supported in your region at this time.”
If you have a US or UK account though, here’s where to go to add these games to your libraries.

What do they expect by now after seven months? Killzone: Shadow Fall? I know that PS+ gives us newish games but not games that are only seven months old.

Killzone will probably come soon, but it’s still new like you said. Every month it’s the same complaints , sigh….

Also I bet most who complains doesn’t own a PS3 hence they can’t double down on free games. Or triple down if they own a Vita

but do you pay 2 subs?
CAE9872
June 4, 2014 at 14:03
Yeah I keep 2 as well but not Gold for both. I keep UK Gold and local for those great discounts that come around now and then and Rand price < UK price.

June 4, 2014 at 17:43
If you don’t have an Xbox One, I see the problem, but I have linked the games to our SA accounts via the console itself. Had no problems. Download started now, although they have to wait. My line upgrade should be finished by tomorrow. If it doesnt work, I will simply take my US account gold to get them.

Well that was easy – I don’t own One but did it via UK account and for a change NO hassle. Well done MS.

I’m guessing you only get the error on a PC? I have linked the free games to both me and my fiances accounts without an error. But we are looking to add a third “junk” gold profile to play games we don’t want to play on our primary profiles. And for guests of course.
