The Xbox Scorpio power difference over the PS4 Pro will be “obvious”

let them fight

It’s real. It’s finally real. Last night saw the reveal of Sony’s mid-generation console, the PS4 Pro. More power, a shell that looks like a cake and plenty of buzzwords were thrown around during that event as some decent-looking visuals were shown off. It’s not a bad piece of tech, one that’ll most likely pump out some great visuals for anyone rich enough to afford a TV that can actually broadcast them.

Microsoft isn’t worried however. Senior Director of Product Management and Planning at Xbox Albert Penello seemed unfazed by the reveal of the PS4 Pro, as Microsoft’s Project Scorpio is aiming to be a more beastly machine that doesn’t rely on it being a console that has to stick to a certain generation to provide content.  “I feel pretty good about the decisions we’ve made,” Penello said to Polygon.

I feel good about what we’ve done with the Xbox One S. Both we and Sony are investing in 4K as the future of the console space, and we have a history of adding features to our hardware.

Project-Scorpio-4k

But in a  battle of hardware, Penello is confident that the 6 teraflop GPU of Scorpio will still leave the PS4 Pro in the dust, even if it has a year to gather momentum:

The performance delta will be obvious. We announced this year to give developers more time to familiarize themselves with the hardware. It’s interesting that we’ve arrived in a similar place. The PlayStation 4 Pro gives developers a road map for 4K gaming. We know it’s important to deliver an experience that demonstrates the power gap between [the PS4 Pro and Scorpio] at a price that makes sense to console gamers.

Look, Project Scorpio undoubtedly has the hardware grunt to really push magnificent visuals home. If you’ve got the equipment to handle it. Remember, you’re going to need one hell of a TV to really see what that beast machine can do. And those don’t come cheap.  And you know what else is expensive? New eyeballs, because both consoles look like they’ll be melting a few peepers at the rate that they’re pushing for 4K and HDR graphics. MY EYES!

  1. Xbox was throwing major shade last night lol There’s a lot to consider. I personally don’t think we grasp yet what the Pro or even Scorpio means for gamers and gaming in general. Sony took an interesting approach, and in a way, down-played the Pro, and as a result, not many people are actually going crazy for the thing, which, at the end of the day is a good thing as it doesn’t alienate the current PS4 userbase. It’s priced well and as an upgrade option, it’s not too far out of reach, but as for Scorpio, I can see it being $100-$150 more and the disparity between Vanilla and Scorpio One will be much greater, so it’ll be interesting to see the reaction to that.

Well the thing I think MS was punting was the one-platform idea. “Look at all this extra power, it’s basically a new generation. But all your previous gen games will work on this. And the next.”

      I like that direction.

The PS4 already has a strong proposition though, strong market share, strong library. They don’t need to make up for a poor current gen performance like MS does. Sony are already ahead. So just an upgrade is fine for them.

Also with that large disparity between the Vanilla and Scorpio are they planning on releasing different versions of games for each platform? If not, developers will most likely favour the platform with the larger user base leading to games not fully utilising the power of the newer platform anyway.

Missing the point. It’s not just about this generation. It’s about the next one too. Your Xbox One games will work on all MS consoles going forward.

What I predict is 2 graphic settings. Not as advanced as PC, but you only need 2. One for the One, one for the Scorpio. See, the devs no longer have to choose. THAT is the whole point.

Obvious in the negative or obvious in the positive? We’ll only know this for sure when the system is released.

So we have one of the ‘new’ consoles out in the world. It appears Sony have released their own One S (albeit with a faster processor) that is really only for people with expensive 4K TV’s. I think the Scorpio (maybe Xbox Pro? I hope not) will be more of an upgrade designed for everyone. I know MS have said that it won’t feature exclusives but they’ll be pushing hard for people to upgrade – they’ve already said that there will be deals for people who want to trade in their Xbox One’s at launch – and they also said it was down the developers how they used the Scorpio. All this makes me think that Phil wants the Scorpio to succeed the One and become the standard console. The One was Matrick’s baby that Phil adopted after the farcical launch. Now he’s planting his own seed and producing his own baby.

Scorpio is Microsoft’s Alamo. It’s their Little Bighorn… their VERDUN! I can already see Microsoft rushing the line (mistakenly thinking that Bigger means Better), dressed in their brightly coloured coats, while Sony picks them off one by one with machine gun fire.

The Scorpio is yet another case of Microsoft flying blind and being totally reactionary this generation. The fact that it’s coming out a year later suggests they had no idea what Sony has been working.

Absolutely, they’re swinging for the fences. It sounds great on paper, but they’re going to screw it up.

Parity will win once again, on multi-plat games. Otherwise, all is well in this console country. All hail PC.

I still highly doubt that the scorpio will render “true” 4K gaming at 60fps

      Exactly my 1070 i7 4770k can’t do 4k 60 . My card alone was 650 Canadian. I’d rather my consoles do 1080p ultra 60fps locked

Mark my words the new PS4 will not be able to play games at 4k, it just doesn’t have the hardware under the hood.

You guys are setting yourself up for disappointment again. Choo choo so much hype but no one checks the details rofl …

It will only be able to stream and play movies at 4k not games …yet every article reads as if you will be gaming in 4k.

“PlayStation 4 Pro gives developers a road map for 4K gaming” quoted from Sony.
