There was a multiplayer Mass Effect First Person shooter?

Mass Effect 3 has a multiplayer component. I can’t say I’ve even looked at it yet. I’m told it’s similar to Gears of War’s Horde mode and that it’s actually pretty damned good, but I’m still busy with the single player game – which is what’s always been most important to me.

The multiplayer, apparently, started out as a first person shooter set in the Mass Effect Universe, called Mass effect Team Assault.

“The goal was simple,” claims Geoff Keighley in his expose on the making of Mass Effect,  The Final Hours of Mass Effect 3 (via Kotaku), “to create a standalone multiplayer experience in the Mass Effect universe that would mix the play styles of Unreal Tournament and Battlefield 1943 – and likely be released as a downloadable game.”

Hardly surprising; Mass Effect has evolved (devolved?) in to more of a shooter and less of an RPG with each successive game. A first-person Mass effect hasn’t happened – but it could still! Do you think Mass Effect would work as a multiplayer focused FPS? I’m not so sure emulating Unreal is really the way to go – but I’d totally play something more akin to Star Wars Battlefront (which is not too dissimilar from Battlefield, really), with an all-out galactic war; though if I’m being honest that’s not the direction I’d like the series to go. If Bioware is planning on switching genres, what I’d really like to see is some epic space battles ok the X-wing/TIE-Fighter/Wing commander ilk or even something on a grander scale, like Homeworld.

If you just can’t get enough Mass Effect news, Geoff Keighly’s “The Final Hours of Mass Effect 3” is available on the iPad, with a PC version coming soon.
