There’s a new F1 game coming this year…

Many have a strange fascination with motorsport that I’m unable to comprehend. I don’t see the appeal of watching some vehicle go around and around a track for hours. I do like the hum and buzz of the engines through the TV though, as that sort of white noise is perfect for a Sunday afternoon nap. Nothing will get me to sleep quicker than actually playing a Formula 1 game – but for people who love to play a digital version of the sport there’s good news.

Yes, there’s a brand new Formula One game coming this year, but here’s a bit of bad news. It’s only coming to the old consoles, and PC. This year’s game, however, brings with it some of the actual sport’s biggest changes – including turbochargers and the ERS system.

There will be one for the new consoles, but only next year to coincide with the 2015 racing season. The older game will be digitally updated to make everything relevant.

“Our title for the new generation formats will mark a huge step forward for the F1 series,” said creative director Stephen Hood. “We want to be out there earlier in the season and deliver new season content updates digitally as the 2015 season progresses; it’s very exciting for the series and our players.”

Here’s a look at this year’s F1 game. F1 2014 launches on 17th October 2014 for the old consoles and PC. It’ll launch anew in 2015 on PC and the new consoles.

Feel the power of new turbocharged FORMULA ONE™ cars in the most accessible FORMULA 1™ video game yet, including a new driver evaluation system to adjust the game to your level, shorter career options and new Very Easy mode. F1 2014 features all the cars, drivers and circuits from the 2014 FIA FORMULA ONE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP™ including new tracks in Russia and Austria.

I usually watch the first three and last three laps, then I start channel hopping. Especially when they race in Monaco

I tend to watch most of it – although nowadays I PVR the thing and watch it in fits and starts…

I HATE what F1 has become – it is the pinnacle of motor racing but instead its all tyres, fuel saving, wing this, underdraft that…they should be able to pretty much do what they want when they want! That is how you get innovation.

Standardizing the cars means it’s up to the drivers to perform, but then it also means more and more you get a convoy going instead of a race.

I agree with you, to an extent. I also hate the crazy restrictions, but things like the fuel-saving and tyres has quite a large function and THAT inspires innovation. Because A LOT of the technology they develop are eventually transferred to actual road cars. So forcing them to focus on fuel and tyres helps development and research.
That said, lately I’ve been much more interested in Le Mans. Le Mans covers more k’s in a single race than an entire F1 season, uses considerably less fuel and the cars reach much higher speeds. That is innovation.

I watch any Le Mans races I can – I tend to watch approx 16 hours of the 24 hrs of Le Mans. There is innovation!

I just don’t like all the driver aids – DRS zones to make it easier, etc. I remember a race at Hungary where Mansell sat behind Boutsen the ENTIRE race because it was difficult to pass. When you see that many passes at a notoriously difficult track to pass then there is no driver skill – its who is one fresher tyres, activates the DRS faster/better.

            Yes I am a traditionalist in F1…

I am so much a traditionalist F1, and I completely agree with how boring the races have become. All I’m saying is that I understand why they’re doing it, because they want it to be meaningful rather than just pure epic gearhead madness (which makes it dull)

I can’t be the only one that found this to be extremely funny….Very easy mode and making a game shorter are appealing features?

Then they should play one of those swipe left or right racing games on a mobile device then.Well there’s nothing wrong with very easy mode though, it caters for non gamers

    BEST WAY TO WATCH F1:
    – Father in law’s house
    – Epic Sunday mealtime overindulgence
    – Watch the race start
    – Nod off
    – Wake up and watch a lap or two
    – Nod off
    – (repeat quite a few times)
    – Wake up for dessert
    – Profit!

I downloaded the MotoGP demo on my PS4, and it is crazy difficult!!! I can’t corner at all, My bike slips out from under me all the time….. Last bike game I played was probably in the early 2000, but they sure have changed a lot!! I don’t think I can handle the learning curve…. feel like an idiot to be honest!! My wife was laughing her ass off at me trying to get the thing around corners!!!

Bike games are notoriously difficult. Have you tried changing controls to left to move and right for accelerate and braking? I tended to use this for bike games (and car games) when MotoGP came to original Xbox.

Otherwise try a slower bike to get use to it – and turn ALL assists on perhaps?

I had all the assists on!! It didn’t help squat!! The demo only has I think one bike, so you are supposed to see that you shouldn’t play it!!!

The game is just too hard, but I will try over the weekend again…. I guess I just need to give it a few more goes before throwing away 4gb of downloaded doodie!!

I have a MotoGP game on the Xbox 360… it’s so freaking hard even with all assists on. Without them I’m forever going wide on corners, or over steering and falling on my face.

I played 2013 on PC and the graphics are amazing if you’ve got the GPU to flex it’s muscles. Highly recommend playing with a controller for a fuller experience.

The Hungarian GP was pretty entertaining! Different strats, crashes. Even the taxi driver was good (Lewis, started from the pits and came second). My biggest problem is that it always seems one constructor is so far ahead of the rest for some reason. The entertaining racing is happening a bit further down the grid.

Geoff, F1 is so much more than just that. Gamers especially should see the appeal in it. But you’re a console gamer, so the need to know hardware isn’t really important, is it? ;P

We can agree to disagree (you know how heated these debates can get).

Personally I think the amount of technology and invention that goes into a single car is quite a bit more impressive than a guy flopping around on the grass, screaming after someone grazed his elbow. 🙂

I play on all platforms (though I only own 2), but technology means my love for pc is unrivaled.
