There’s a new PlayStation 4 update (to fix the last one)

HOORAY

The PlayStation 4’s 2.0 update wasn’t quite the revelation Sony had hoped. Instead of creating joy, it caused issues for a number of gamers, specifically with its Rest Mode, which ended up making a number of systems inoperable. Sure there were fixes, and users could easily have skipped using rest mode, but that’s beside the point. Thankfully, there’s a new update out now that’s rolling out to fix the problems the last one created.

There’s not much to say about the update, whose patch notes simply list “Stability improvements,” but Sony’s confirmed it’ll fix the Rest Mode woes that have plagued many since the 2.0 update rolled out last month.

The download isn’t huge, coming in at just 217.2 megabytes. It’ll start automatically if you’ve foolishly and recklessly been using Rest Mode, or can be activated through Settings>System Software Update. While the 2.0 patch initially gave me no issues, Rest Mode stopped working, and I had to reinitialise my system. I use Standby to charge my controllers and make sure my games are all up to date, so I’m rather happy this patch has come sooner rather than later.

Stuck at work, want to update as soon as you’re home? Download the update using your work’s internet, and update via USB!

I think it was just simple communication when they implemented rest mode. The guy coding it thought they meant they wanted people to take a break from the PS4 so they could get some rest, not just a sleep mode for it.

Yeah, encountered this last night… When my console wouldn’t respond out of Rest mode, I momentarily freaked out… Then remembered there were issues with rest mode since the 2.0 update… Then cursed myself for not remembering BEFORE I switched to rest mode and wept softly thinking my PS4 was now a fantastic looking paperweight… Thankfully, I decided to go all “IT Crowd” on it – turned it off and on again at the power and voila – back in action! Very relieved panda.

    Glad they’re fixing it asap.

So Geoff, are you suggesting people violate their IT policies and abuse the internet?

    Shame on you
