These 18 minutes of No Man’s Sky give a taste of what you can do

No man sky

At E3, they like to make journalists feel special by giving a select few of us some behind-closed-doors demos of games. Of course, as the weeks go by afterwards, they release these demos on the world via YouTube. Normally, we know it’s all scripted or fairly predictable, so it’s not a big surprise to see the exact same footage again. No Man’s Sky is a bit more surprising.

IGN has secured a month of exclusive content with No Man’s Sky. After choking on my jealousy, I watched their first video – 18 uninterrupted minutes of No Man’s Sky. Here it is:

This is a planet that was shown to us during E3. It’s clear that they selected it because it’s fairly pretty and predictable and it allows Sean Murray to show off a variety of features of the game. I can’t blame him for reusing the same planet when he knows what he wants to show and other planets might not afford him the same opportunities. Still, everything right down to the goat attack leading to a raised alert level happened during the behind-closed-doors session. Then again, in my session he lasted a bit longer and I got to see an AT-AT sentinel appear. Spoiler: they’re badass. Thereafter, the demo takes a new turn as he explores another moon/planet.

At least now you can all see what I tried to describe to you in my hands-off preview. It still blows my mind the sheer scale of the game. When Murray zooms out into the galactic map and shows just how many points of light there are, all of which are solar systems with their own planets, moons and other points of interest, it is simply staggering.

I’m still convinced that I will be a non-aggressive player, traveling the universe exploring. It’s actually strange for me to think that other people would choose to play as pirates or attackers in general – why would you want to destroy the universe? Then again, I don’t understand how Darryn managed to play as a Renegade in Mass Effect.

It’s so frustrating. So many people are complaining about the lack of a true objective in the game. It’s frustrating because it’s understandable lol I get why people are not fully on board when it comes to this game, but man, is it not good that for once we hardly know anything about a game or what we might find?

People say the same thing about Elite: Dangerous. With games like this though, you make your own story. That’s the point. Everyone is so used to being told to go here, do that, then this, the end.

In Elite (which I’m loving btw), you just get dumped in a starter ship at a random station with a few credits to your name and that’s it. The rest is up to you. And it’s fantastic.

People have formed pirate groups, exploring parties, barricaded popular stations. One group on reddit has even set up a subreddit where you can post if you get stranded while exploring and they’ll run fuel out to you so you don’t have to self destruct.

I still can’t get over the nagging feeling that the true test of the never ending game will be after playing it for 10 hours. If people are still enjoying it after that then they’ve nailed it.

True. I like how he said that some players will reach the point where they say they’re done with No Man’s Sky. Who knows, if it’s it’s enticing enough to hold player’s attention that long, it could be something really special.

This seems like the type of game that I could only play for 30 minutes at a time… But who knows, I could be wrong?

It looks like the type of game I love to play. Games like Subnautica, Ark, Rust, dayz etc… there point is to explore, survive and build. Love it.

Now for what the video showed: frame rate needs work. Game looks like it runs at mostly under 30fps and that just wont do.

Also texture pop in at distance. SSD might sort that out, hopefully.

I am very keen on this, if they manage to optimize it.

I have not seen a game like this that has decent optimization yet including the list of games you mentioned. 🙂

      Well maybe Subnautica.

ARK runs fairly well for an alpha game (40 odd fps for me).
Subnautica runs very well indeed. I have not tried Rust in some time 🙂

Oh forgot space engineers 🙂 that also runs very well.

Damn I need to play Space engineers again. As for Ark it runs 45-55 FPS for me unless I fly …. then everything drops to 10FPS. Still needs work but is awesome none the less.

          Edit.
Also space engineers comes to a grinding halt if you build a roid sized mining vessel with 50×50 large drills and turn them on.

Er why would you want to prance around like a hippie when there are planets to conquer?

Perfect game to share your dreams across the gaiafield, start the Living Dream Movement, build up an armada of ships and journey to the center of the universe aka the Void.

The more I see this game the more im lost lol Most games have objectives. Main and side objectives. Hell even Tetris had an objective or two. I worry that having such a massive world to explore will negatively impact the game. Reason being that I wouldn’t for starters want to venture out into a galaxy with absolutely no one to bump into. Sure you will be lucky to bump into a friend of yours, but thats the thing… its so huge that it seems like you would mostly be alone exploring. I know exploring is the main theme of the game, but yet again…. some people need proper meaningful objectives. Maybe im just looking at this game completely wrong.
