GCawards

The nominees for the official 2014 Gamescom Awards were announced well before Gamescom itself kicked off. For games to have been nominated, the publishers had to have paid a nominal fee – which makes them all a little suspect. In the end the winners were decided upon by a group of judges. Here’s who they selected as winners of Gamescom.

  • Best of Gamescom Award
    Evolve (Take-Two Interactive GmbH/2K)
  • Most Wanted Consumer Award:
Super Smash Bros. (Nintendo of Europe GmbH)
  • Best Console Game Sony PlayStation 4:
The Evil Within (Bethesda Softworks/ZeniMax Germany GmbH)
  • Best Console Game Microsoft Xbox One:
    Evolve (Take-Two Interactive GmbH/2K)
  • Best Console Game Nintendo Wii U:
    Splatoon (Nintendo of Europe GmbH)
  • Best Role Playing Game:
Risen 3 (Deep Silver / Koch Media GmbH)
  • Best Action Game:
    Evolve (Take-Two Interactive GmbH/2K)
  • Best Simulation Game:
Theatrhythm Final Fantasy Curtain Call (Square Enix GmbH)
  • Best Sports Game:
PES 2015 (Konami Digital Entertainment B.V.)
  • Best Family Game:
LittleBigPlanet 3 (Sony Computer Entertainment Deutschland GmbH)
  • Best PC Game:
    Evolve (Take-Two Interactive GmbH/2K)
  • Best Mobile Game:
Super Smash Bros. für 3DS (Nintendo of Europe GmbH)
  • Best Social / Casual / Online Game:
LittleBigPlanet 3 (Sony Computer Entertainment Deutschland GmbH)
  • Best Online Multiplayer Game:
    Evolve (Take-Two Interactive GmbH/2K)
  • Best Hardware
    Oculus Rift DK2 (Oculus VR)

It’s interesting to see that this year’s Pro Evo Soccer has beaten out this year’s FIFA, but there are a few reasons for that. Firstly, EA didn’t pay for any of its games to be nominated, plus the games up for nomination would have had to have never been shown in a public space in the German market before.

It’s likely also why Risen 3 won over Dragon Age 3, or The Witcher 3 as the best role playing game – though the Germans do love their German-made RPGs.  The only award decided upon by consumers was the most wanted, an award that Super Smash Bros for the Wii U walked away with.

The game that won best of E3’s everything, Evolve, once again made a sweep of the awards, grabbing, best PC Game, best multiplayer and the overall game of show.

Look out for our own awards later this week.

But is it really a breath of fresh air? Maybe it’s recycled and reprocessed fart air… oh wait that’s Call of Dooty.

The Witcher 3 doesn’t need to pay a fee to be the best. We all know that The Witcher 3 is going to be the best.

Microsoft paid for Rise of the Tomb Raider. Does that mean the Xbox One is the best?

So… the publishers who pays the highest fees wins the awards?
And if you don’t pay a fee, you don’t get nominated?
Well there goes Gamescom’s credibility, right out the window.

Companies pay for press coverage. Companies pay for awards. Companies can buy public perception.

I know resolutiongate is getting old, but by not awarding Evil Within the best Microsoft Xbox One it clearly isn’t over yet.

They had to pay a fee to make their game eligible to be nominated? WHAT FUCKING BULLSHIT IS THAT? I’m guessing they already pay to be able to display their games at Gamescom,
