Sony Computer Entertainment America’s CEO Jack Tretton has made recent news with some rather unruly behavior. Apparently Tretton suddenly felt the necessity to openly call out both the Xbox360 and the Nintendo Wii, regarding their limited lifespan in an article with CNN, where he painted the competition as no particular long term threat to the PS3.
In what comes across as a rather bitter remark, considering the Nintendo DS is out selling the PSP by quite a substantial margin just about everywhere except Japan, Tretton likened the DS to a Game Boy, saying “Our view of the ‘Game Boy experience’ is that it’s a great babysitting tool, something young kids do on airplanesâ€. Tretton goes on to suggest that a self respecting individual over twenty is not a socially viable candidate for a DS, as they should consider themselves “to old for thatâ€, he said.
Further more Mr Tretton questioned the relevance of Sony’s competitors by saying, “If you’re really going to sustain technology for a decade, you have to be cutting edge when you launch a platform,” while the statement seems to have been aimed at Nintendo, Tretton went on to suggest how the PS3 has a long term superiority over its competitors, saying “Here we are 4 years into the Playstation 3, and it’s just hitting its stride. We’ll enjoy a long downhill roll behind it because the technology that was so cutting edge in 2006 is extremely relevant today and is conspicuously absent in our competition.”
While some of what Tretton has suggested may actually have an element of truth to it, your guess is as good as mine when it comes to, why now? The specific conduct seems rather out of place considering that while Sony may have recently overtaken global Xbox360 sales, it has a rather long way to go before complete domination over its rivals, which is not what Mr Tretton’s recent remarks have suggested.
