After a chapter 11 brawl to end all brawls, THQ is pretty much dead, with its remains being drawn and quartered. Ubisoft, Sega and Koch Media have snapped up some great properties in the recent auction, but a few games are still looking for a new home. While Darksiders is most likely considered toxic by now, there’s one other franchise that is being left to gather dust. A strategy title that had players looking for a new home in the stars, a revered game that hasn’t been seen in years. That game is Homeworld, and now, you have a chance to save it.

Even though Homeworld developer Relic Entertainment was snatched up by Sega in the auction, the actual IP for the Homeworld brand is still the property of THQ. Or at least, that’s what indie developer teamPixel LLC believes. That studio happens to also be pretty keen on making a new Homeworld game, and to do so, they’ve set up a campaign to fund the acquisition of the franchise IP.

It’s called the ‘Save Homeworld’ campaign, and it’s got a funding page on Indiegogo right now. The mission statement for the drive reads, “13 years ago, one of the most legendary sci-fi games was released, and the space RTS genre took a giant leap forward in innovation and fun”.

Yet, somehow, nearly 10 years later, fans are still waiting for the next instalment of the Homeworld franchise. We here at teamPixel, LLC are tired of waiting for the next Homeworld game and would like to rally fans together to bring the franchise back. The THQ bankruptcy has given all of us a massive opportunity to put Homeworld back in the hands of gamers. teamPixel respectfully requests the support of Homeworld fans everywhere in helping us raise funds to acquire the Homeworld franchise from THQ during their bankruptcy.

Sounds like a lofty plan, especially for a studio that has been involved mainly in mobile games and apps according to PCGamesN. While the studio may not be rocking any big name game credentials, they believe that they can bring the beloved strategy space-faring game back to life on mobile platforms, as they’ve “been testing several prototypes, and we’ve found the experience to be incredibly immersive and intuitive. It’s almost like the games were meant to be played this way.”

$50 000 gets the ball rolling on this project, which would see the original Homeworld released once again on Steam and GoG. And whether you like ‘em or not, it’s reassuring to see someone out there is attempting to bring back that iconic space exploration and combat game.
