GDC is currently underway, which means most of the rad indie and non-indie people have descended upon San Francisco to talk about all things gaming industry. Plenty of people have made big reveals, but there is also still plenty of local stuff going on, too.

We often hear about game clones and how awful they are, or how they end up stealing money to the actual creative developers. Normally, it’s done to games that have minimal narrative – it’s much easier to clone something that’s all gameplay and not much else. However, someone has decided to clone Mike Bithell’s celebrated Thomas Was Alone. While the creator might argue that it’s derivative and not a clone, it appears to be a stripped down version of Thomas Was Alone and makes me incredibly sad.

In happier news, a local indie was Greenlit. Apparently our very own Alessandro even did some work on it, so we’re all quite proud of Fezbra Khumba.

I recently discovered A Good Snowman is Hard to Build, a puzzler about being a monster and making snowmen that shows some impressive design. Plus, it’s got a unique pricing scheme – embrace winter while you can because it’s priced based on the temperature in Celsius. I just wonder if below freezing temperatures will result in the studio paying you to buy the game.

A quick reminder – Cadence is looking for Kickstarter monies and looks amazing, as is Albert & Otto. Remember, Kickstarter only takes your money if it’s successfully funded, so you would only need to pay up in about a month. Don’t let payday be your concern with this.

Finally, here’s 18 minutes of Volume gameplay with Mike Bithell that really shows off what the game is all about.

I have already put down money on Cadence.
It’s the first Kickstarter project I’ve ever actively supported.

Talking about clones.. I just found out about a game on Play Store called Just 11 which is a clone of 2048, but much easier than 2048. All you have to do is add up the numbers to 11, if you can. I love it, try it. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=it.tinygames.just11&hl=en
