When it was released earlier this year, Homefront didn’t exactly set the review charts on fire. Despite the Red Dawn inspired setting and compelling storyline, the game was a criminally short experience with only an average multiplayer component to keep gamers interested. However, gamers still bought a few million copies of the title, meaning that sales were promising, and THQ has decided to keep the franchise alive by transferring development over to Crytek for the sequel.

Having already closed down the original Homefront developer Kaos studios, THQ has confirmed that Crytek will be developing the game, hoping to release it between April 2013 and March 2014.

It’s unclear as to which Crytek studio will be handling the development duties for the sequel, but rumours point to Crytek UK, formerly Free Radical Studios, as being the group assigned to the project.

Speaking to VG247, THQ’s Core Games EVP Mr. Bilson expressed his happiness at the switch in development studios. “Selecting Crytek to take Homefront forward underscores our strategy of working with the industry’s best talent”, Bilson said. “Homefront’s unique setting and storyline captivated gamers the world over. With Crytek’s industry leading technology and legendary experience in the FPS genre, we’re supremely confident that the next Homefront will deliver that AAA-quality experience that players demand”.

“We see Homefront as a really strong universe that has a lot of potential and that has been expertly created and marketed by THQ”, Crytek boss Cevat Yerli added. “We believe that bringing our level of quality, creativity and production values to the next Homefront title, creates an opportunity for both THQ and Crytek to deliver a truly blockbuster game.

“It’s really important to us that THQ has the faith in giving us a lot of creative freedom over one of its most important properties to allow us to bring the Homefront world to life in a new and innovative way”.
