2017 Hall of Fame

Some video games are timeless. They’re instant classics on release, or they build up an audience over the years by being way ahead of their time. Games like that, don’t just deserve to be celebrated. They need to be admired and passed on down to future generations who can learn so much from them. That’s a driving factor behind The Strong Museum’s Video Game Hall of Fame, which selects a number of contenders every year from public nominations before an “international selection advisory committee” of industry experts pick a winner.

This year’s nominees have been announced, and they stretch from that one game you always find yourself clicking away on when your boss isn’t checking up on you through to a need to catch ‘em all:

  • Donkey Kong
  • Final Fantasy VII
  • Halo: Combat Evolved
  • Windows Solitaire
  • Mortal Kombat
  • Street Fighter II
  • Myst
  • Pokemon Red/Blue
  • Resident Evil
  • Portal
  • Tomb Raider
  • Wii Sports

“These 12 World Video Game Hall of Fame finalists span decades, gaming platforms, and countries of origin–but what they all have in common is their undeniable impact on the world of gaming and popular culture,” The Strong museum’s Jon-Paul C. Dyson said in a statement via GameSpot.

They’re among the most influential games of all time.

The Strong Museum’s previous winners from the 2015 and 2016 so far include Doom, Grand Theft Auto III, The Legend of Zelda, The Oregon Trail, Pac-Man, Pong, The Sims, Sonic the Hedgehog, Space Invaders, Super Mario Bros., Tetris and World of Warcraft. Games which were recognised for their impact in the industry and earned a permanent spot within that museum.

My money is on Final Fantasy VII earning top nods this year, although the violent brute within me is more interested in seeing which fighting game comes out on top when Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter II go head to head one more time. The winners will be announced on May 4, a day before I host my Hall of Lame event which includes a mirror that I’ll stare at for a few minutes before going inside to cry myself to sleep.

Say what you like, but Wii Sports was amazing. Way deeper than people realise, and it opened up gaming to friggin 80 year olds. My gran played Wii Bowling and loved it.

I completely missed the Wii Sports thing. No one I knew had it.

80 years old, that was my Wii age when I first started!
Took me a week to get it down to a more respectable 25.

Don’t sell it short. After all, Wii Sports was the game that made the Wii so popular when it was launched and also essentially changed the face of gaming as we know it.
It was due to the popularity of the Wii that Xbox Kinect and PS Move was released.
And now more recently, by extension, VR across the various platforms.

When I consider the many hours my mates and I jammed Wii Sports, damn, it was like nothing else out there.

So yeah, I can most assuredly understand why it’s there as one of the most influential games ever.

Myst was always one of those games that I wanted to play, but just never had the chance to.

    All well, a myst opportunity.

I’ll bet on Pokémon Red/Blue. It’s either that or Final Fantasy 7.

Feels like a stretch to put all the genres together like that. Some really good games will be completely overlooked.
