Forget about pulling off a 900p spin for the ages and get ready to land a 4K twist that would make the Hawkman himself cry as Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1 + 2 is going next-gen. Or new-gen, I’m not exactly certain what the moratorium on generations around here. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 is getting a graphical glow-up on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on March 26, and is also slated for a Nintendo Switch release later this year.

Activision says this version will include a “variety of upgrades” that will see the game pull off a sweet 120 frames per second at 1080p or a full 60fps at 4K resolution. The Nintendo Switch naturally won’t have these eye-watering numbers, but hey kickflips on the go, I’ll take it. “High-fidelity atmospherics will be added to the next-gen upgrade for Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 and 2,” Activision’s description reads.

This unique graphical feature will allow players to enjoy the experience of sharper dynamic shadows, reflections and lens flares, as well as enhanced skater textures and more on next-gen consoles.

Here’s the catch: These upgrades won’t be free unless you own the deluxe edition. If you own a standard version of THPS 1 + 2, you’ll need to fork out for the $10 “Cross-gen deluxe bundle” that gives you the new-gen upgrade, a new skater by the name of Ripper, and some retro gear. The upgrade path also seems a tad bit confusing, so here’s the breakdown for you:

  • Do you have the deluxe edition of THPS 1 + 2 on PC and PS4? Free upgrade.
  • Do you have the deluxe edition of THPS 1 + 2 on disc for Xbox One? You’ll need to pay for the upgrade because reasons.
  • Do you have the deluxe edition of THPS 1 + 2 on PS4 disc? Free upgrade.
  • Do you not have the deluxe edition of THPS 1 + 2 on your platform of choice? $10 please.

That being said, last year’s remaster is a perfect example of how to inject fresh life into a classic franchise. Giving the original two games a major face-lift, Vicarious Visions went out with a bang before it was absorbed into Blizzard, delivering a stunning and nostalgic road trip down your nearest half-pipe. Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1 + 2 was pure passion on display, it handled like a dream, and it was fueled by the best licensed soundtrack that video games had ever put together.

It’s the ultimate skate escape.
