Top four revealed for CS:GO ESL African Championship

The first ever ESL tournament to land on African soil is about to reach its final stages with a championship taking place at the rAge expo on October 6th. Four teams have battled it out through two seasons of online competitions to decide who will represent the North and South of Africa. Two teams from each half of the continent are facing off for a R2 million prize pool, one of the largest in the history of local esports and CS:GO.

The ESL African Championship will be a memorable tournament for a number of reasons. As mentioned above it boasts one of the largest prize pools in African history, it’s one of the first times African teams are being put head-to-head on LAN on African soil, and two international shoutcasters will be joining the broadcast team for the first time in our local history. The most exciting part, of course, is the showdown between Africa’s top teams.

Lauren “Pansy” Scott and Jason “Moses” O’Toole will be joining the shoutcasting team at rAge.

Taking the top seed after their recent victory in the season 2 qualifier are Bravado Gaming, South Africa’s current champions and potential champions. Bravado Gaming lost to Energy Esports in season 1, but ranked up overall points to secure the number one seed from South Africa. They’ll be joined by Energy Esports, who earned 17 points, and drew against Bravado Gaming in the second season. The top four spots were heavily contested with Bravado Gaming and Energy Esports securing them in the final weeks of the competition. Both Bravado Gaming and Energy Esports have created one of the biggest esports rivalries over the past few years in a number of esports titles and their rivalry will now extend beyond our border as they’re both aiming to bring glory to South Africa as they take on North Africa.

North Africa will be headed up by Limitless.gg, the first team to qualify for the final event over a week ago. Limitless won five out of their seven matches, drawing only two and racking up 17 points to secure their spot. They beat the second-seeded team, Vibora, by five points. Limiteless.gg will be travelling down from Algeria, an arguably strong African country for CS:GO. Their rivals (or teammates for North Africa) are Morocco’s Vibora, a team who narrowly secured their spot at the championship in the final weeks of the competition.

Gauging how these four teams will fare head-to-head is tough at the moment. This is the first time we will see them compete on LAN, noting Bravado’s performance online against various North African teams in competitions in the past. Both Bravado and Energy Esports have been gaining strength in the past few months as the entire local CS:GO scene has been growing in competition. It’s going to be an extremely tight competition throughout, but we’re bias and will obviously be backing our local lads throughout the competition. Whether they have what it takes to bring glory to the South, we can’t underestimate the North.
