Torchlight Frontiers is planning on being in your life for a very long time

During a recent interview with the game’s co-creator, the length of the game was discussed as well as plans for future content

I’m not the biggest fan of Hack ‘n Slash RPG’s, I’ll admit. I tried my hand at all three Diablo games and fell off them pretty quickly, although I blame Diablo 3’s horrific story for that failure. Despite this, I’ve always had a soft spot for Torchlight. I don’t know why it resonated with me more than the games it’s drawing so heavily from, but I’ve played hours of Torchlight and its sequel, so the news that Torchlight Frontiers is going to take longer than both of those games to complete just tickles me in just the right way.

Max Schaefer, co-creator of both Torchlight and Diablo, has revealed during an interview with The Escapist that Torchlight Frontiers will take players between 60-80 hours to complete the main story, with a bunch of “level-free” zones that should add even more to that total runtime.

Schaefer also went on to say that Echtra Games has planned out over 5 years of post-launch content, including PvP game modes and further competitive systems, which I assume will be leaderboards of some kind. While Hack ‘n Slash RPG’s do fit the “games as service” model many developers are edging towards these days, Schaefer wanted to clarify that the team was being very careful regarding the monetisation of Frontiers, ensuring that the game doesn’t turn into a “Pay to Win” experience.

One of the things being monetised is additional character slots, as players will start off with five but will need to pay extra for more. Players can also expand their stash size through microtransactions and pay to access maps with slightly better loot that can be shared between friends, which sounds…fine? As long as the loot isn’t obviously superior to variations that aren’t paid for, I guess access to some exclusive weapons is okay.

I don’t know, man. I believe Schaefer when he says that the team is being careful with the monetisation, and paying for additional character slots seems okay. It’s just when he mentions that you can buy your way into areas with slightly better loot that gets me concerned. Of course, the superiority of this loot might be negligible so I guess we’ll just have to see how this all pans out when the game eventually launches later this year.

I’m with you….the fact that the word “monetised” popped up lost me.

Yeah, i saw a review from a youtuber testing the game, and said something about you need to level up the area you are in before moving onto the next area. Even with following the storymode he was not able to progress to the next area so had to farmlevel the previous area until he was able to progress. As it seems that you don’t have an actual character level, but rather area levels.

Creating a problem and then selling players the solution.

    Sigh.
